Warhawks men’s baseball is back

Photo courtesy of AUM Athletics By: Tasker Wheeler MONTGOMERY, Ala. —The Auburn University at Montgomery men’s baseball started their season back at Southard Stadium in Saint Leo, Florida where they played a doubleheader. The first two games AUM came up short and lost 2-10 and 1-3 and ended strong with a 13-3 win. (AUM Athletics, Matthew Del Sol) The Warhawks last season was 19-31 and will look to improve and push to win the Gulf South Conference (GSC) Championship. It is junior Matthew Del Sol’s first season here at AUM. The second baseman from Elizabeth, New Jersey was asked some questions. The Major League Baseball home run record is something that is nothing short of controversial, but no matter your opinion on the subject what Aaron Judge has done this year for the New York Yankees (NYY) deserves a round of applause. If you don’t know, Aaron Judge is a 6’7 280 lb. outfielder for the Yankees. Drafted in the 31st round of the 2010 MLB draft, it took Judge seven years to establish himself in the major leagues, once he did the rest had been history. BY: Alex Roberson Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) Baseball is having a winning season so far this year. They are currently sitting at a record of 18-12. The team sits in the 5th seeding spot in the conference while having a conference record of 8-7. The team is now halfway through the season, and they have continued to progress higher in the rankings. In the 2022 season, the Warhawks received a devastating 4-15 loss against the Columbus State University Cougars. That was a tough bout for the Warhawks, as the Cougars are ranked #8 in all of Division II. The team had an impactful game all-around, as it contributed to a 22-4 win against Talladega College. AUM’s baseball team preps to play on February 1

BY: Alex R. Hope you have your bats ready to swing into the new baseball season! With the start of the season around the corner, here are some things you need to know. In the 2021 season, the team finished with an 18-23 record. In Gulf South Conference (GSC) play, they recorded a 16-20 record. In one of the conference wins, the Warhawks were able to come on top with an astonishing 23-3 win over the University of Montevallo. The team was able to continue with post-season play but lost two games against Lee University (Tenn.) and Valdosta State University, which ended their run. The team batted an average of .278 with an on-base plus slugging percentage of .742. AUM did a good job with getting on base, as their slugging percentage was .370. AUM vs Delta State Recap

BY: Hannah Long The Warhawks of AUM faced the Statesmen of Delta State in a three game series on April 11 and 12. Game one was a rollercoaster of emotions for both teams. The Statesmen struck first, scoring on a wild pitch by Troy Jones. They scored again in the fourth inning, now leading 4-0. In the fifth inning, the Warhawks got on the board with an RBI by Hartsfield, making the score 4-1. Delta State scored again, making it 5-1 in the sixth inning, but AUM came back from that deficit and put four runs on the board, making the score 5-5. Warhawks Fall Short in All Three Games vs Mississippi College

BY: Hannah Long The AUM baseball team set out to face the Choctaws of Mississippi College in Clinton, Miss. on April 17 and 18. This series was a big one for the Warhawks. The GSC tournament is coming up, and they needed this weekend to be in their favor. Game one started off hot for AUM as they scored one run in the first inning to kick things off. Senior Troy Jones pitched eight innings, only allowing three runs on eight hits and striking out six Choctaws. The Choctaws answered AUM’s one run and scored a run in the second inning, bringing the game to a tie. The fourth and fifth innings were quiet, but Mississippi College woke up and scored another run in the sixth, putting them within one run of the Warhawks. AUM vs West Florida Baseball Recap

BY: Hannah Long The AUM Warhawks took on the West Florida Argonauts in a three game series last weekend, March 12 and 13. The first game, starting at 5 p.m. on March 12, started off right for the Warhawks. Troy Jones, the senior ace pitcher, took the mound and never left. He scattered six hits and struck out seven Argos to complete the game with a 3-0 win. This was a huge game for the Warhawks, considering West Florida is ranked No. 21 in the nation. This win brought AUM Baseball to 11-7 overall and 9-7 in Gulf South Conference play. While it was a great celebration to come out and beat this team in the first game of the series, the Warhawks still had two other games they needed to take care of to complete the series. Hot Bats in Huntsville

BY: Hannah Long The AUM Warhawks set out to face University of Alabama in Huntsville Chargers on March 6 in a three-game series. The windy and cold weather was not ideal for the first game, but that did not stop the Warhawks. Micah Henderson took the mound for seven innings and did not give up any runs. This win advanced AUM to 12-9 overall. The bats were hot for the Warhawks in game one, and they finished with 15 hits total. Junior Corey Armstrong had a great day with four hits and three RBIs. His highlight at bat was during the fifth inning when bases were loaded. Armstrong hit a double, upping the score even more. Despite Undefeated Conference Weekend, AUM Baseball Leaves Something to be Desired

BY: Justin Martin AUM Baseball has a history of producing winning teams every season. Even with the difficult transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II status, AUM baseball continues to be competitive in a difficult conference. The Warhawks opened the season with a tough matchup against No. 20 North Georgia. The Orange & Black played three games in Dahlonega, Ga., against the Nighthawks and dropped all three games to start the 2020 campaign. AUM was only able to gain 10 runs over three games, but allowed more than 10 runs in each contest. With nowhere to go but up, AUM baseball set their sights to their Sunshine State foe: Embry-Riddle University. The Warhawks played ERU much closer than North Georgia in their previous series.
