Mental Health in College

Opinion

BY: Emily Mann There is always talk of the severity of mental illness and how it can affect everyday life. However, there is very little talk about the statistics of mental health affecting students in college. Individuals mature from high school to college and begin to notice their mental states. Many begin to feel different than they used to. Many begin to notice how they have been feeling and understand that there is something causing their minds to struggle. Students always hear people speak about depression, suicide, anxiety, and stress but never about all of the other illnesses troubling students.…

Comparing Brands: Grocery Shopping

Opinion

BY: Kaleria Jackson As a college students we need to eat and eating in the Café can get repetitive. Going grocery shopping is the next form of action. There are a few things obstacles when going grocery shopping. For instance, prices for groceries can be a bit expensive, and as a college student your budget is not as big as when you are grocery shopping with your parents.  Do not be scared to get the store brand products. It may not seem like a big deal, but plenty of people feel ashamed of not getting name brand products. Do not…

Opinion

Full of opinions, but free of spoilers.  The universe has finally blessed us with a movie we all have been wanting but most importantly, a movie this world needs. A Star Is Born has been on the tongues of many these past months leading up to the premiere. When the trailer first came out people were hooked, and the internet went wild for it and continues to. Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper star in the fourth remake of this movie, and possibly the best version; granted I haven’t seen the other ones but I don’t need to because this movie…

Campus, News, University

BY: Emily Mann One of the most controversial topics in the country is the LGBTQ community. Some support it and others object. Coming to terms with one’s sexual identity takes a toll on an individual’s mind. When young adults enter college, it can be difficult to find a sense of belonging and acceptance. Four in ten teens to young adults identify their living community to be unaccepting of the LGBTQ community. Feeling unaccepted in an area of residence can lead to a feeling of unacceptance on a college campus. It can lead students to easily feel lost. Research concludes that…

The Rise of Students Grading their Teachers

Opinion, University

BY: Savanna Sabb The roles of the teacher and student are starting to reverse. In a traditional classroom, it has always been the teacher who graded the students. The teacher told the students what needed improvement and where they were excelling. The teacher determines whether the students will pass or fail. There are surveys that are given to most students both college or high school after each semester that allow them to anonymously critique their teachers. There are also websites like Rate My Professor and Rate My Teacher that students are able to use to rate their teachers on a…

My Summer Working In the Professional World

Editorials, Theatre AUM

BY: Brittany Vallely If you told me a year ago that I would be working at a professional theatre in New York for the summer I would not have believed you. However, when I received a job offer from The Gateway Playhouse for a carpentry apprenticeship I knew I could not pass up the opportunity. I applied for the job at the Southern Eastern Theatre Conference (SETC) last March, where professional theatre companies from all over the country look for technicians. Since I am theatre major and have worked on set construction while in college, I figured this would be…

Captain Marvel Has Arrived!

Opinion

BY: Brittany Vallely The new Captain Marvel trailer was recently released on Sept. 18, 2018, and is already making history for women in film everywhere. Statistically, many female leads in film are known to be young, small and white, who’s other leading companion is usually a man. Even though times are changing, there are still more roles for women in the business who fit this description. Captain Marvel/ Carol Danvers, played by award winning actress Brie Larson, is a game changer in the Marvel movie franchise because she has many responsibilities. First, at the end of Marvel’s movie Infinity War…

Facebook’s New Voice Assistant- Aloha!

Opinion

BY: Brittany Vallely There is Siri, Alexa, Cortina, and now Aloha. Facebook is getting ready to launch their own voice assistant that will be more dependable than the rest, according to an article on Social Media Week. Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, worked on his own personal voice assistant for over a year and was inspired by Iron Man’s Jarvis. He is now using those codes to create a speaker for the public. The reason why Facebook is wanting to compete with Apple’s Siri, Amazon’s Alexa, and Microsoft’s Cortana is because they are becoming more demanding in households. Social Media Week…
