A Different Texture

BY: Kaleria Jackson Hair is a discussion, but to be more specific, black hair is a discussion. It’s an argument, and it’s a lifestyle. It is the story that is never ending and changes over time. Hair in the black community can connect the most unlikely of people together. Our hair binds us together, whether we know it or not. It’s almost like a fingerprint--we all have one, but one person’s hair is not the same as the next person’s hair.  Black hair varies from curls to zig zags. Every curl pattern is different, but there is a chart that tries to breakdown the most typical types of curls and put them into sections. Each hair type requires a different hair treatment to go along with it. Even then, that treatment may not work for your hair.  Let’s go even further to the t...

AUM’s Mid- Autumn Festival

BY: Kaleria Jackson The Office of Global Initiatives hosted a Mid- Autumn Festival this October on the Quad. The festival included different offices from all over campus that came out to participate in the festivities. The offices had multiple tables set up across the Quad, with each table having different activities or goodies. As students came out to the event, you could see how excited they were to see the festival going on. I was able to go around to each table to glance at what each office decided to do at the festival. The students had the chance to play musical chairs to win cake pops or bowl for a chance to win an AUM bottle. As for the food, there was sweet potato pie, cake pops, popcorn, cookie cake, candy, spring rolls, crab rangoon, wontons, and more. Students raved about h...

AUM Clubs and Organizations on Campus

BY: Brandon Barker There are many campuses around the country that have clubs and organizations. These clubs are a part of the campus lifestyle or college experience. They give you an outlet to express yourself like you were not able to in high school, and you are more likely to meet  individuals like yourself. If you want to join in on the fun, AUM has loads of campus clubs and organizations that you can join today.  There are many clubs on campus to attract everyone on campus. Some of them even align with the majors that AUM offers. For example, the Communications Department has many clubs that anyone can join. AUM Live is the newest club that organizes events and covers school- wide news. It gives  hands-on communications practice that involves real-world work, especially for gra...

AUM Women’s Soccer

BY: Randy Dunn    Soccer is a sport in which everyone must be in one accord to accomplish the same goal, which is to win. Unfortunately for AUM’s women’s soccer team, they are having trouble putting together a complete game. So far this year, the Lady Warhawks have mustard up just one win, which leaves them sitting with an overall record of 1-11 and  a conference record of 1-6 (0-6 at home and 1-5 away.) Although the record doesn’t show exactly great play, there are a couple of bright spots to look forward to.     Out of 23 total players, 16 are underclassmen, which gives them time to develop and learn the system better so they all can add a dynamic role to the team as the seasons to come. There is a positive outlook when it comes to players l...

Real Life Scary Movies

BY: Morgan Thayer With Halloween right around the corner, who doesn't love a good list of horror movies? What about horror movies based on real-life events? These horror movies that are based on real-life are sure to make your spine tingle with fear, considering they could’ve very well happened to you.  Open Water, which was released in 2003, is a movie about a couple who goes scuba diving in open water. Then, their boat leaves them behind in the shark-infested waters. The movie is based on the real-life story of American tourists Tom and Eileen Lonergan, who were diving off the Great Barrier Reef when their diving company left them behind. Two days later, when the couple was noticed missing, it was too late. This movie is scary enough to make you mark the beach off your vacati...

Brain Food

BY: Caitlin Gallagher There are only two months left in the semester. That means two months to buckle down and get those big projects done and exams studied for. I know as well as anybody that it can be taxing to sit down and study or do homework. There’s always something else that we’d rather be doing, or we might get distracted by the T.V. or our phones.  Did you know that there are certain foods that we can consume to help boost our brain functions? Our brains are made up mostly of fats, so it makes sense to consume foods that mirror what our brains are made of. No, I don’t mean chocolate, sugar or Taco Bell. There are such things as “healthy fats” that help increase our memory. Nuts, seeds and oils are considered as such, so opt for snacking on peanuts, almonds, pumpkin se...

Gaining Experience with AUM Athletics as a Student Worker

BY: Randy Dunn AUM gives its students opportunities to gain experience in their field and put money in their pockets as student workers. I am the announcer for AUM volleyball and soon to be basketball, and it’s giving me early experience in the analyst and announcer field of my job, which I intend to pursue once I graduate from AUM.     On top of giving me experience and money, this position brings me closer to the fans and AUM. Now when I walk around campus, I get random people asking me, “Hey are you the volleyball announcer?” and with a small smile I embrace it and say, “Yes I am.” It makes me feel good because I put a lot of energy into keeping the gymnasium energetic and entertained. Also, I’ve learned the game of volleyball to where now I can talk to others...

Fall 2019 White Coat Ceremony

BY: Kaleria Jackson On October 4, 2019, Auburn University at Montgomery hosted their fourth annual White Coat Ceremony. The White Coat Ceremony is a rite of passage for medical students, and was created by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation in 1993. During the ceremony, a white coat is placed on each student’s shoulders, and often the Hippocratic Oath is recited, signifying their entrance into the medical profession. At the beginning of the ceremony Julie Firman, DPN, NP, FACHE System and Chief Nurse Executive at Baptist Health, gave the keynote remarks that gave an inspiring message not only to the students, but to anyone in attendance.  During the ceremony, Jean D. Leuner, PhD, RN, CNE, FAAN presented the new official seal that is now on the lab coats that were placed on each stud...

The Company You Keep

BY: Kaleria Jackson As we navigate our way through life, we come across plenty of people. Some of the people we meet are not meant to stay in our lives forever. Time will show the course of how some people are seasonal. The company that you keep is very important because he people you allow into your life can be detrimental to your health.  When forming new friendships, or even relationships, begin watch for red flags that can show up. These red flags show the possible signs that a person may not be fit to be in your life.  The positive energy that you have put out in the world can cross paths with negative energy. That negative energy can affect to your own energy. Protect your energy, because not everyone is not meant to have the luxury of being in your space or ...

Halloween Happenings

BY: Caitlin Gallagher Happy Fall, Y’all! It might feel like we are still in the middle of August, but it is officially Spooky Season. October is the month for pumpkins, haunts, and hayrides. Luckily for us, there’s no shortage of any of those in Alabama.  If horror is what you prefer, I’ve got a list of hauntingly good attractions that are sure to “creep” it real. Although there aren’t any haunted houses here in Montgomery, Paintball on 111 is one of the closest fright-fests for the Halloween season. Located in Holtville, about 25 miles from AUM, they are offering a haunted hayride and a haunted maze, shooting live zombies with paintballs and zombie target shooting. These attractions will be open every Friday and Saturday from now until November 2.   If you head no...
