With Halloween right around the corner, who doesn’t love a good list of horror movies? What about horror movies based on real-life events? These horror movies that are based on real-life are sure to make your spine tingle with fear, considering they could’ve very well happened to you.
Open Water, which was released in 2003, is a movie about a couple who goes scuba diving in open water. Then, their boat leaves them behind in the shark-infested waters. The movie is based on the real-life story of American tourists Tom and Eileen Lonergan, who were diving off the Great Barrier Reef when their diving company left them behind. Two days later, when the couple was noticed missing, it was too late. This movie is scary enough to make you mark the beach off your vacation list real quick.
Scream is a classic 1996 horror film that is filled with humor. This movie tells the story of a group of teens that are stalked and killed by a man named Ghostface. Did you know that this movie is inspired by Danny Rolling, also known as the Gainesville Ripper, who murdered five Florida students over four days in 1990?
Remember that creepy doll, Annabelle? Well, the 2014 movie Annabelle is based on claims by paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren that there was a Raggedy Ann doll that actually moved. The couple claimed the doll was inhabited by a spirit of a child named Annabelle.
Veronica, a Netflix movie released in 2017, is about a girl who tries to contact the spirit of her dad using a Ouija board during a solar eclipse. During this scene, she passes out, and the following days result in mysterious and unexplainable events. The true story behind this movie is that in 1991, Estafania Gutierrez Lazaro tried to contact the spirit of her friend’s dead boyfriend, and in the process, she passed out and shortly died in the hospital.
These movies are sure to make you jump, scream, and be thankful that your life isn’t the inspiration for a horror film. Happy Halloween!
