Binge Watching and You

Binge Watching and You

BY: Caitlin Gallagher Netflix, naps and snacks—this used to be a perfect Sunday. I would start a new series as quickly as I finished the first. I could not watch an episode fast enough. If you are like me, binge-watching can quickly become  an everyday occurrence. What if I told you that binge-watching negatively affects your health? Your mental and physical health could be suffering. Northwestern Medicine compiled a list of negative effects of binge-watching that include: a “drug-like high”, isolation, insomnia, anxiety and depression, back pain, weight gain and risk of heart disease. Some of these may seem really extreme, but as the epidemic of binge-watching grows, so does the risk for all of these. In a survey released by Netflix, 73 percent of people felt happy as they bin...

Joker Review: A Dark Descent Into Madness

BY: Cory Donde Anyone who knows Batman knows that the Joker is his iconic main antagonist. There have been several films with different interpretations of the demented clown, but Jaoquin Phoenix has set a new precedent on just how dark the character can be. Although the film is technically a DC Comics film, the first three quarters of the film revolve more on the character of Arthur Fleck than the Joker alter ego  he ends up adopting. It's a true showcase of a man who has serious mental disabilities that end up being neglected by Gotham and even ridiculed by its citizens. Gotham is beautifully portrayed as a grimy, dark, crime-ridden city that has not been touched upon much in a realistic sense before. It has a tinge of what a large city with a large, angry lower class would have ...

Which Master’s Degree Should You Pursue?

BY: Taniya Frazier How do you know which master's program is right for you? Is it something so simple as taking a personality quiz or something more complex? What are your career goals? Your dream job will require a degree in a related field. You will need the experience to land the job. I want to be a Creative Director for Cosmopolitan women's magazine. That is my dream. Students have to factor in tuition cost, location, accreditations, and probably the most important: how much you can make with that master's degree.  You should pursue a degree in a subject that you enjoy learning about. It's already bad enough that you have to stay in school longer, so make sure you're doing something that you love. Make sure you're getting a master's degree for the right reasons. Is it necessary ...

Why Do People Want to Be Scared?

BY: Taniya Frazier The quickened heartbeats, the rush of adrenaline, and what all Halloween lovers want most: the fear. Why do people want to be scared? Halloween is the one time of year that people can feel deep fear and adventures. This time of year, people can directly experience “fight or flight.” This is the time where people can throw safety and security to the wind and try heart pumping experiences! Kaylin Finch, Early Childhood Education senior, enjoys the suspense. She stated, “I like thrillers because I feel like they keep you on the edge of your seat. You don’t know what to expect next, so it keeps your adrenaline going. They also keep you engaged throughout the entire movie. I don’t necessarily like being scared, but I like not knowing what’s next.” She explained that sh...

Shriek Week Flashback

BY: Taniya Frazier It’s spooky season! Shriek Week is an AUM tradition as old as time. Each October, the Campus Activities Board hosts a week of events for a spook-tastic Shriek Week. As Shriek Week approaches, I’m excited to see what’s in store and how far it’s come since 2015. It’s time for a blast from the past.  Shriek Week is an unforgettable experience! Students and faculty/staff are all welcome to enjoy the festivities of the week. The whole campus gets involved in one way or another. Since 2015, there have been different activities that range from terrifying to non-scary. The library started out by picking a Halloween theme and decorating the building. They had Trick or Treat tables where students could pick up snacks or popcorn. If students were more daring, they could e...
