Learn More About the Career Development Center

BY: Chris Porter Here at AUM, we have so many resources to offer our students that most of them get overlooked simply because there isn’t enough publicity placed on them. One resource that should be put in the spotlight is the Career Development Center (CDC). This is a program designed to develop and prepare college students for the world of work they are bound to enter once they graduate. This is also a place that creates opportunities for its students to kickstart their careers. If you are a student struggling to figure out options for yourself, this is the right place for you to find solutions.  At the CDC, the ultimate goal is to assist in building professional success for students of AUM. For more information about the CDC, I talked to one of their career advisors, Mabs Se...

Should You Get Your Master’s Degree?

BY: Savanna Pruitt May is quickly approaching and many college seniors are getting ready to graduate. Though most are excited and relieved to be receiving their bachelor’s degree, the inevitable question still goes through almost everyone’s mind: Should I get my master’s degree?  Data from the National Center for Education Statistics shows that “between 2000–01 and 2017–18, the number of master’s degrees conferred increased by 73 percent, from 474,000 to 820,000 degrees.” As the numbers reflect, more people than ever are earning master’s degrees. Additionally, data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) shows that master’s degree holders do earn more on a weekly basis and experience lower unemployment rates than those who hold bachelor’s degrees or high school diplomas. ...

Gaining Experience with AUM Athletics as a Student Worker

BY: Randy Dunn AUM gives its students opportunities to gain experience in their field and put money in their pockets as student workers. I am the announcer for AUM volleyball and soon to be basketball, and it’s giving me early experience in the analyst and announcer field of my job, which I intend to pursue once I graduate from AUM.     On top of giving me experience and money, this position brings me closer to the fans and AUM. Now when I walk around campus, I get random people asking me, “Hey are you the volleyball announcer?” and with a small smile I embrace it and say, “Yes I am.” It makes me feel good because I put a lot of energy into keeping the gymnasium energetic and entertained. Also, I’ve learned the game of volleyball to where now I can talk to others...

Which Master’s Degree Should You Pursue?

BY: Taniya Frazier How do you know which master's program is right for you? Is it something so simple as taking a personality quiz or something more complex? What are your career goals? Your dream job will require a degree in a related field. You will need the experience to land the job. I want to be a Creative Director for Cosmopolitan women's magazine. That is my dream. Students have to factor in tuition cost, location, accreditations, and probably the most important: how much you can make with that master's degree.  You should pursue a degree in a subject that you enjoy learning about. It's already bad enough that you have to stay in school longer, so make sure you're doing something that you love. Make sure you're getting a master's degree for the right reasons. Is it necessary ...

Should Schools Pay Student Athletes?

Should Schools Pay Student Athletes?

BY: Brandon Barker For years, people have been saying that student athletes should be paid, but there has not been much action until now. There is a bill in California that will make it legal for student athletes to profit off their name, image, and likeness. Although the bill will not go into effect until 2023, college sports recruit and schedule games years ahead of time. This will give schools in California a strategic advantage ahead of other states who have not passed this bill.  This is a big deal for college sports, and it could change how we look at the NCAA. In 2013, NCAA video games were discontinued because of numerous legal cases concerning use of likeness and image. In 2015, there was a $60 million settlement  that was considered a win for many former student ...
