Life After College

BY: Alecia Hicks Life after college is one of the biggest concerns of a higher education student. There are so many endless possibilities and concerns to think about. Where will you live? What career path will you embark on? What type of quality life do you want to have? There are so many things to consider. Thankfully, there are amazing schools like AUM that are dedicated to making sure students are fully equipped to go out and make their places in society as successful adults. Moving from college to the “real world” can be very scary. Although college students have already been given a little taste of freedom with on-campus living and events that aid in networking and socializing, real independence kicks in when it is time to leave the campus and enter the workplace. COVID-19 has ...

Graduation Is Around the Corner

BY: Isadora Nicolai The most anticipated time of the year is coming up, but in order to guarantee graduating with flying colors, there are a few things you have to make sure you will get done.  Four years of sweat, tears, all-nighters, freaking out over exams, and of course learning! It has come time to wrap up the studies and finally earn your degree. Although it’s only three short weeks away, graduating can still slip through your fingers. In order for that not to happen, here are some things you have to cross off your graduation list.  Keep up with your attendance. Despite almost being officially graduated, make sure you attend all your classes to the very end. Despite the fact that you may already have a sufficient grade to pass your class, some professors will fail you fo...

Graduating on Time

BY: Jayla Brown Most college students’ worst fear is getting to their target graduation semester and being told they can’t graduate on time. We’ve gathered some tips on how to avoid this mishap. Visit your advisor often.  You may be tired of hearing this, but it helps. Checking in with your advisor never hurts. It’s their job to help you graduate. It can also help put a face to a name. Let’s face it, your advisor could have any number of students to look after. Go set that appointment! Go over your courses before and after your advising appointment.  One mistake college students make is not staying on top of their courses themselves. Before and after you visit your advisor, go over your courses. Write down questions you may have and present them. It is just as muc...

Putting Your Best Foot Forward

BY: Alecia Hicks Although times have been a little challenging when it comes to communicating, due to COVID-19, being a student means looking forward to graduating and finding success in the workplace after college. Preparing yourself to be a professional means practicing for interviews, creating or updating resumes, developing cover letters and more. For graduating seniors like myself, we are expected to have spent the past four years learning and cultivating ourselves into individuals who will eventually add to whatever company or organization we choose to be a part of. If you are expected to be graduating this May, here are a few tips on how to put your best foot forward.  For a  lot of seniors, interviews will be a big part of your lives for the next couple of months until ...

Advice to 2021 Graduates: To Walk or Not to Walk?

BY: Lashundra Daniels Walking the stage for graduation after dedicating yourself to four-plus years of course work is a badge of honor. As college students, we spend countless hours studying, completing assignments and reading textbooks. Why? I assure you that the reason is not merely boredom. All of us have different reasons that inspire our relentless efforts, but our end goal is the same. That goal is to receive a degree at the end For some of us, walking across a stage and receiving applause means everything, while it means absolutely nothing to others. The standing ovation does not excite them because they know their degree was earned by hard work and dedication. Why dress up and spend money on an outfit just to walk across a stage and receive a degree in front of people who we...

Should You Get Your Master’s Degree?

BY: Savanna Pruitt May is quickly approaching and many college seniors are getting ready to graduate. Though most are excited and relieved to be receiving their bachelor’s degree, the inevitable question still goes through almost everyone’s mind: Should I get my master’s degree?  Data from the National Center for Education Statistics shows that “between 2000–01 and 2017–18, the number of master’s degrees conferred increased by 73 percent, from 474,000 to 820,000 degrees.” As the numbers reflect, more people than ever are earning master’s degrees. Additionally, data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) shows that master’s degree holders do earn more on a weekly basis and experience lower unemployment rates than those who hold bachelor’s degrees or high school diplomas. ...

College Is Hard- College During a Global Pandemic is Harder

BY: Savanna Pruitt COVID-19 continues to impact the lives of Americans nationwide, and college students are no exception. The pandemic’s effect on enrollment rates and the college experience as a whole is unprecedented. Enrollment and Graduation Rates According to a report from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, overall undergraduate enrollment is down an average 4.4 percent as of November 2020. While national high school graduation rates stayed relatively the same for the 2019-2020 school year, the number of high school graduates who enrolled in college for the Fall 2020 semester dropped by 21.7 percent from 2019. The same report found “the upward trend in the total number of undergraduate credential earners has stalled in 2020, remaining at 3.7 million due t...

To the Graduating Seniors of 2020

BY: Caitlin Gallagher My first semester here at AUM was Spring 2012. I bought a new backpack, all new supplies, and a laptop. I was so excited to do this—get my degree and get a kickass job afterward. Seven and a half years later, and I’m finally getting my degree, but it’s not how I pictured it.  The worldwide pandemic of COVID 19 has left some of us, especially graduating seniors, feeling a little low. Athletes didn’t know their last game would be their last game. Panhellenic members didn’t know their last social would be their last social. I didn’t know that what I’ve worked towards for seven and a half years would be pushed back for another three months. I know-- I’ll still get my degree at the end of the semester but it sure doesn’t feel that way. COVID 19 has left the wor...
