Resources for Students staying on Campus over Christmas Break

By: Sierra Hall

The fall semester is coming to a close which means two things: finals and Christmas break. ‘Tis the season for colder weather, movie marathons and hot chocolate. But with those two things, some students may not be heading home. Although we cannot create a full home experience, AUM is dedicated to having resources to create a comfortable experience for students who are on campus during winter break.
With the dropping temperatures come runny noses and sniffles. Warhawk Health Services has you covered if you are an AUM undergraduate or graduate student who needs healthcare over Christmas break. Warhawk Health Services is primary healthcare available to students who may face health issues that are not emergency. Warhawk Health Services is located on campus in the College of Nursing and Health Services, Irma B. Moore Hall, Room 102. Warhawk Health Services describes itself as a “comprehensive primary health service” available to students, staff, faculty and their dependents. Any student who has health issues can be seen by a Nurse Practitioner for only $5.00. At the top of the list for this winter season is the flu vaccine, which you can receive for free with Insurance or $25 without insurance. Warhawk Health Services also offers contraceptive counseling, physical examinations, women’s health services, lab testing and referrals. The clinic is open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
For some, the holiday season can feel very stressful due to relationships, school and not being around your support system. AUM’s Counseling and Health Promotion Services is there to help students navigate their entire college experience. CHPS aids students in a variety of ways. As a student, you can receive individual counseling or group counseling. All services are free. In individual counseling, you will work with a counselor to work through issues about what you need help on – from work goals, educational goals, healthy coping mechanisms and understanding a work-life balance. CHPS and its employees are available to help you understand your past life experiences, assess and navigate your present, and plan for the future. Each session is 50 minutes long and you can decide how many times you attend. CHPS recommends the student attend 8-10 sessions but that may vary on your personal needs.
As a student, life can be expensive in various aspects. The biggest one (besides books and tuition) is maintaining and having a car. If you have no desire to move your car from the amazing spot you scored but still want to get your seasonal favorites, you’re in luck! AUM has its transit system which is available to students free of charge. The Warhawk Transit aims to get around Montgomery “safely and comfortably.” Warhawk Transit runs Monday through Friday, starting at 7:30 a.m. and ending at 10:30 p.m. On Saturdays, from 11:00 a.m. until 10:30 p.m. and Sundays from 12:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Warhawk Transit stops at various shopping outlets and restaurants if you want to try a new dish out in town. Warhawk Transit has its app on Apple Store and Google Play where you can see the routes, available shuttles, pick-up times, and pick-up/drop areas.
Auburn University at Montgomery’s main priority is its students and having them feel comfortable on campus. During this winter break look to these resources to help with anything you may need.
