Talking sports and having fun: a letter from the sports editor

Welcome back to AUM everyone.  I’m Patrick Eiland a junior communications major and the new sports editor for the AUMnibus.

My journey to where I am now is a bit different than most of yours.  I graduated from Prattville High School in 2009 and begun attended AUM the following year.  I graduated in December of 2015 with a degree in Psychology.  I never did anything with it since by the time I graduated with that degree I was worn out on the subject.

As the years went by and I fought through some hardships, I realized that I had a love for writing, so I chose to return to AUM to pursue a degree in journalism.  That’s when the COVID-19 pandemic hit and I had to wait a few more years before finally returning.

Now, I’m here as the new sports editor of paper and it’s a position I can’t wait to expand upon.  I love football and baseball.  The Alabama Crimson Tide, New York Mets, and Seattle Seahawks are the three teams I call my own while I claim the New York Knicks as my NBA team but I’m still growing into basketball.

I want to not only cover the Warhawks sports teams and give them the spotlights they all deserve, but I want to make the AUMnibus sports section as much of a discussion area as it is a news feed.  Talking about sports is as fun as watching them to me so I’d love to sit down and talk about stuff, leaving it as an open discussion to have with anyone that wants to have one.

I’d also love to cover the Tide and Tigers in a weekly recap as well as a “this week in Warhawks sports” where I help highlight the ups, downs, and accomplishments of our student athletes.

Now granted, I’m only a week into the position so plans may change as they usually do for anyone, but my point is I’d love to cover sports from our campus to a regional and national level.

Aside from the sports realm, I want to help bring the school’s many clubs into the spotlight.  Last year I sat down with a few different clubs and highlighted them and their accomplishments and I’d love to continue to do that.  AUM is about everyone.  From our Spirit Band to our Economics Club, to the Athletic department, and to us at the AUMnibus.

I feel if any of us in the student body accomplish anything amazing, then it needs to be said so they can get their moment of praise.  Maybe in a certain newsletter that our head editor made mention of in her editor’s letter.

If you’d like to reach out to us for anything or to ask to have your club highlighted for any reason, email us at theaumnibus@aum.edu or reach out to me personally at peiland1@aum.edu and I’ll be eager to get back to you.

As for you all, drink water to keep yourself hydrated during these hotter early months of the semester and good luck to you for all of your classes, projects, and bigger ventures you take on this semester.
