Road to Victory

Sports

BY: Alecia Hicks AUM’s volleyball team is starting the season off with some heat. The team has been barrelling through the season with competitive victories. In the first couple of months, the girls have made their way through three invitational rounds: the USC Aiken Invitational, Shark Invitational and Reddie-Tiger Invitational.  All of the girls have been working very hard to make sure that the team stays on a steady incline as they make their way to the championship at the end of the season. The team’s first official game was back in September against the North Greenville Knights. The girls dominated…

With this kind of record, they held the quarterfinals of the GSC championship series at their home court. Facing Valdosta State University and winning 3-0, the lady Warhawks advanced to the semifinals to face the Chargers of UAH in Hoover, Ala.  Although the Warhawks played tough, it wasn’t tough enough. The Chargers took the game and won 3-1.  Some star players to recognize in that semifinal game are Mariane Cassiano, Nyah Wittlesey and Giada Pais-Marden, who led…

They scored again in the fourth inning, now leading 4-0.  In the fifth inning, the Warhawks got on the board with an RBI by Hartsfield, making the score 4-1. SportsBaseball

BY: Hannah Long The AUM baseball team set out to face the Choctaws of Mississippi College in Clinton, Miss. on April 17 and 18. This series was a big one for the Warhawks. The GSC tournament is coming up, and they needed this weekend to be in their favor.  Game one started off hot for AUM as they scored one run in the first inning to kick things off. Senior Troy Jones pitched eight innings, only allowing three runs on eight hits and striking out six Choctaws.  The Choctaws answered AUM’s one run and scored a run in the second…

Troy Jones, the senior ace pitcher, took the mound and never left. He scattered six hits and struck out seven Argos to complete the game with a 3-0 win. Sportsathletics, Baseball

BY: Hannah Long The AUM Warhawks set out to face University of Alabama in Huntsville Chargers on March 6 in a three-game series. AUM Women’s Basketball Season Recap

Sportsathletics, basketball

BY: Randy Dunn The Lady Warhawks had a very rough start and finish to this season. After finishing 12-16 and having some sparks of great play, they finished the 2020 season 2-13. A big factor that played a part in this disappointing season was COVID-19. The protocols and rules coming into play limited the Warhawks when it came to practicing and being able to become more solid as a team. Last year, the Warhawks had many junior and senior leaders who knew how to win when games got tough and close. Unfortunately, this year this team was noticeably young and…

AUM Men’s Basketball Season Comes to a Wrap

Sportsathletics, basketball

BY: Randy Dunn With the Warhawks’ basketball season coming to an end it did not come with a conference championship or even an invite to the playoffs. Although they came short of those goals and ended the season with a 3-14 record, not all is lost. A big factor that played a part in this disappointing season was COVID-19. The protocols and rules coming into play limited the Warhawks when it came to practicing and being able to become more solid as a team because of the team’s inexperience with only three seniors returning to the roster. Last year, the…

Take In Every Moment

Sportsathletics, Soccer

BY: Hannah Long COVID-19 has impacted everyone’s lives. For AUM Women’s Soccer, it has impacted their season.  The team plays roughly 17 games each season, and more if they make it to the GSC tournament. During this season, the Lady Warhawks were allowed only six conference games with a one-game guarantee in the playoff tournament. This is not a way the seniors wanted to end their season.  Senior Ali Brewer spoke with me about her senior year and how she wishes things were different. “Yes we are lucky to even have a season, but with only playing six games it is…

AUM Men’s Basketball vs. University of West Florida

Sportsathletics, basketball

BY: Randy Dunn The AUM Warhawks are coming back home to play against the University of West Florida Argonauts after a four-game road trip. Although the gym won’t be packed, just being back home under their own lights with familiar routines will help the Warhawks in a great way. This will be the third matchup of the COVID impacted season. Both teams grabbed a win in the first two games. Maharrith Jackson (#0 Senior Guard), Stanley Davis(#12 RS Senior Guard) and Jeremiah Bozeman (#22 Senior Guard) will continue to lead this young Warhawks team, as they are the only three…

AUM Softball Could Benefit from Stoppage in Play

SportsCoronavirus, CoViD-19, NCAA, softball

BY: Jason Martin With so many sports programs across the country being affected by the CoViD-19 virus, there can be positives taken from the nationwide sports hiatus that was put into effect by the NCAA and the Gulf South Conference. One benefit to the stoppage in play could lay with the AUM softball team. The Warhawks were tabbed to be one of the top teams in the country after being picked third in the Gulf South Conference preseason polls, and that is where they currently stand at the break. After winning seven games in a row, the Orange & Black…

NCAA Makes Right Move with Eligibility Announcement

Campus, Sportsbasketball, Coronavirus, CoViD-19, NCAA

BY: Jason Martin In the middle of all the uncertainty around college athletics as a result of the COVID-19 virus, the NCAA made the right move and shut down sports for the foreseeable future. One thing that had sports fans and student athletes concerned was the question surrounding students’ eligibility. There is a lot that goes into giving a student-athlete their eligibility back. Scholarships, incoming freshmen, and promised playing time makes for an interesting and difficult decision on how to continue with this decision. Winter sport athletes like basketball may have a more difficult time arguing an extra year of…

AUM Men’s Basketball Takes Vital Step in Quest for Relevance

Sportsathletics, basketball, NCAA

BY: Jason Martin Alabama, Alabama State, Auburn, Faulkner, Huntington, and AUM are all fighting for relevance in central Alabama, and the AUM men’s basketball team took a big step in the fight after a stellar 2019-20 season. The Warhawks finished the season with a winning record at 15-14 and competed in the program’s first-ever Gulf South Conference Championship.  AUM struggled to begin their season, dropping three of their first five games to Rollins, Miles, and Embry-Riddle. The season, however, saw many accomplishments as early as their 115-80 loss to Embry-Riddle— senior guard Darrion Taylor became the 19th player in program…

AUM Women’s Basketball Sees Growth in Opening Season

Sportsathletics, basketball, NCAA

BY: Jason Martin In their first season as full members of NCAA DII’s Gulf South Conference, Auburn University at Montgomery’s women’s basketball team showed a great deal of promise during the 2019-20 season. The Warhawks finished the season with a 12-16 record and went 5-15 in conference play. Led by senior forward Victoria Morales, AUM improved upon their 5-23 record from the 2018-19 campaign.  AUM started the season strong by going 4-1 against regional non-conference opponents. However, the Warhawks did see a swift decline in performance when conference play opened in late November. There were, however, some positive signs in…

AUM Softball Embraces Underdog Role In 2020

Sportsathletics, NCAA, softball

BY: Jason Martin Auburn-Montgomery Athletics does one thing very well: spring sports. AUM Tennis is one of the powerhouses at the NAIA level, and their play in the transition phase from NAIA to NCAA DII proves that AUM tennis will not go away anytime soon.  At Q.V. Lowe Field, the Warhawks have just two losing seasons in baseball in the history of the program. Playoff appearances, all-conference nominations, and national championship appearances are expected of AUM Baseball.  AUM Softball, meanwhile, has never registered a losing season. The Warhawks opened play in 2009 and have already won two national championships. The…

Despite Undefeated Conference Weekend, AUM Baseball Leaves Something to be Desired

Sportsathletics, Baseball, NCAA

BY: Justin Martin AUM Baseball has a history of producing winning teams every season. Even with the difficult transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II status, AUM baseball continues to be competitive in a difficult conference. The Warhawks opened the season with a tough matchup against No. 20 North Georgia. The Orange & Black played three games in Dahlonega, Ga., against the Nighthawks and dropped all three games to start the 2020 campaign. AUM was only able to gain 10 runs over three games, but allowed more than 10 runs in each contest.  With nowhere to go but up, AUM…

AUM Men’s Basketball vs. Florida Tech University

Sportsathletics, basketball

BY: Randy Dunn After an unfortunate loss the night before, the Warhawks were back in action on Saturday afternoon against the Panthers of Florida Tech. This was only the second meeting of the two schools— the Warhawks won the previous matchup in 2018 (71-65). Knowing they let their first game slip away, the Warhawks hit the floor running against the Panthers. Senior guard #5 Carlos Bell put the team up 21 points while adding five rebounds, two assists, a block, and a steal. On top of his stellar play, other solid players like junior guard #2 Darrion Taylor added 10…
