Materials You Need for the Job You Deserve

Materials You Need for the Job You Deserve

BY: Tameesha Matthews Writing and building a great resume is a crucial step in any job search. Without proof of a professional background, a prospective employer is likely to stop considering you as a suitable candidate for a job offer. Cover letters and portfolios are as equally important. Cover letters serve as the head of your resume -- they give you an opportunity to introduce yourself and mention past and present experiences that may qualify you for the job. Portfolios serve as the tail -- they are work samples that back up the information you’ve provided in your resume and…

Review: Shakespeare’s Hamlet at Alabama Shakespeare Festival

Review: Shakespeare’s Hamlet at Alabama Shakespeare Festival

BY: Molly Gray Last week, I had the privilege of going to Alabama Shakespeare Festival in Montgomery to see Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Here are my thoughts about the production. If you have ever seen Hamlet, you know that there are multiple characters and locations to tell the story. There are three acts. The play lasted two hours and 45 minutes with two intermissions. For some people, this would have been too long. However, I thought that it was just enough time to really get a good idea of the plot.  The play was put on by Bedlam Theatre. They are known…

“Treat Yo’ Self!”

“Treat Yo’ Self!”

BY: Kaleria Jackson Sometimes you just have to “Treat Yo’ Self!” As college students, we can put ourselves last when it comes to our mental health or even our physical appearance.  The phrase “Treat Yo’ Self” comes from Parks and Recreation’s Donna Meagle. What does it truly mean? It means spending money or time on something you will enjoy or taking a day out of a busy week to indulge in things that will relieve your stress levels. It may be hard to adjust your schedule at first, but after some time, treating yourself will come naturally. Knowing what may…

Hazing Prevention

Hazing Prevention

BY: Morgan Thayer This past week marked National Hazing Prevention Week. This week prompts universities across the country to speak up against hazing by hosting different events, tables or workshops. Here on our campus, several of our Greek organizations held guest speakers, interactive tabling and training on how to prevent hazing and why it is important to know the signs of hazing.  AUM has a strict Anti-Hazing Policy, which can be located in the Student Handbook (page 31). Hazing is defined as any action taken or situation created intentionally, whether on or off campus, to produce mental or physical discomfort,…

Fighting the Flu

Fighting the Flu

BY: Caitlin Gallagher Flu season is upon us, and unfortunately, it does not discriminate. If you’re like me, you cannot afford to miss classes due to the unwelcome virus. Luckily, there are a few things you can do to eliminate the chances of catching the flu and other airborne illnesses. Washing your hands with warm water and soap multiple times throughout the day is the old-fashioned way to stop the spreading of germs and viruses. I know‒ parents probably told you that when you were younger, but it’s tried and true. If you aren’t able to wash your hands more…

You Can’t Sit With Us

You Can’t Sit With Us

BY: Taniya Frazier Most people know the phrase, “You can’t sit with us,” from the classic 2009 film Mean Girls. The phrase is referring to someone being unable to socialize or physically be around a certain group. Unfortunately, this type of thinking has translated into reality. I have seen cliques and in-groups that do not accept other people that don’t align with their mindset or perspective. College shouldn’t be a social pyramid--this isn’t high school.  It’s time to break the stigma of cliques. AUM is an inclusive campus. People should be able to feel welcomed, regardless of where they come…

AUM’s Honors Program Giving Back

AUM’s Honors Program Giving Back

BY: Daaiyah Latham The AUM Honors Program Food Pantry was created to help students in need of food. The program has been feeding the campus since 2016. Sonni Gunnels, a former Honor student, formed the idea. Gunnels noticed that she and others were struggling towards the end of the month with food scarcity.  In 2012, she began to pass around confidential surveys to get statistics of the food insecurity around campus. Gunnels conducted a second survey before she graduated so the school could be "aware of the pantry's presence on campus." The surveys included questions based on the students’ experience…
