The Importance of Internships

You just got that degree and you’re ready to dive head first into your field, but you can’t find a job. Why is that? Employers tell you that you don’t meet the requirements. You need experience– more experience than you probably acquired in your entire college career. Most people think that they can find jobs instantly after college, but that’s not always the case.

There is an extreme need of experience when it comes to getting a job in your field. Internships can open doors to prominent job positions in the future. Entry-level positions are requiring some type of experience in the desired field now more than ever.

The Career Development Center is readily available to help you find out what’s available, whether opportunities paid or non-paid, and what the most important thing about an internship is. The Center helps students get career ready. There are always jobs and internships available. The Center takes time with students to plot a course for whatever position or goal the students are looking forward to. Students can get instant help on editing and finalizing their resumes. Along with the help of the Career Development Center, you can also ask your advisor for help with finding the perfect internship.

The Career Development Center has a new career platform called Handshake. Handshake allows students to find awesome jobs and internships. I signed up and I am loving the website and the mobile app. Handshake also allows students to stay up-to-date on current and upcoming Career Development Center events. The platform represents over 300,00 employers, including multiple Fortune 500 companies. The platform spans across 165 countries and the 50 states, including start-ups and non-profits.

With the Handshake app, students can upload their professional profile. Students can upload all of their work experience, projects, and extracurricular activities. There are over 700,000 internships at the palm of your hands. You can filter and personalize opportunities based on your experience and interests.

The Career Development Center is located on the third floor in Taylor Center. For more information on possible careers and internships, call 334-244-3344 or email career-dev@aum.edu.
