“Treat Yo’ Self!”

BY: Kaleria Jackson

Sometimes you just have to “Treat Yo’ Self!” As college students, we can put ourselves last when it comes to our mental health or even our physical appearance.

The phrase “Treat Yo’ Self” comes from Parks and Recreation’s Donna Meagle. What does it truly mean? It means spending money or time on something you will enjoy or taking a day out of a busy week to indulge in things that will relieve your stress levels. It may be hard to adjust your schedule at first, but after some time, treating yourself will come naturally.

Knowing what may bring you peace during a stressful time in your life can be difficult. Here are a few ideas on how to “Treat Yo’ Self!”. I asked a few students and faculty how they treat themselves.

Student Chasity Smith says, “It depends on if I deserve it, but I may typically go get my toes done, or go see some friends to catch up.”

“As long as the important things are handled, then there is nothing wrong with treating yourself too much or too little. Typically, I go get my hair done since I do not get it done all the time” said senior Sidnie Rose.

Professor Hilary Gamble tries to go out to eat once a week to treat herself. She even said that in order to treat herself, she buys things that she knows will make her life easier.

It may be hard to spend money on lavish things in order to “Treat Yo’ Self,” but there are other cheap ways to “Treat Yo’ Self!”. For example, if you cannot afford to go to the nail salon, bring the nail salon to you. Buy a small pan to put your feet in, then fill it up with hot water and essential oils. Try lighting candles and playing some jazz music to set the mood. If having a spa day is not for you, “Treat Yo’ Self!” to a well-deserved nap, or try going to bed early. It does not take various amounts of money to “Treat Yo Self!”. The simple things will suffice.
