Photo Courtesy of Frank C. Williams By: Jordan White Are “open” campuses an unsafe choice for college students? Auburn University at Montgomery prioritizes campus safety for students, faculty and staff, says the director of police operations on the campus.  The campus has been referred to as an “open campus” by students in comparison to others, but that is not the case. The openness of the campus is all about the perspective of what hard work goes into keeping the AUM campus safe.  In a recent interview, AUM’s Director of Police Operations Brenda Mitchell talked about the different ways that campus police advocate for campus safety.  Mitchell, also known as Chief Mitchell, wants students to feel like they can approach her or any of the other campus police office...

More than a dozen schools have reported bomb threats against them, including schools such as Howard University, Spelman College, Alcorn State University and Bethune Cookman University. Luckily, Alabama State University, an HBCU that sits 10 minutes away from AUM, hasn’t received a bomb threat. However, it's not far-fetched to think that this could have happened or that there’s potential for it to happen in the future. With that being said, it is extremely important for students to be aware of their surroundings while on campus, especially in these times. Here are some things to keep in mind to ensure your safety as you roam through campus grounds. Get to know campus...

Halloween Safety Tips

BY: Allison Singleterry Halloween is less than two weeks away, and there are many ways to help everyone have a safe experience.  When dressing up for Halloween, make sure kids are wearing something bright, or incorporate reflective tape so people who are driving in the neighborhoods are able to spot them quickly. It’s also a good idea to make sure not to have really long dresses or things like long sticks or swords where kids can get hit or trip over things easily.  Make sure to go trick-or-treating in an area or neighborhood you are familiar with. You should stay in neighborhoods or streets that are well lit. When walking through the neighborhood, make sure to stay on the sidewalk or to the far edge of the street if there is no sidewalk.  As for the drivers on ...
