How to Dispute a Grade in the Era of Virtual Learning

BY: Jessica Alldredge Virtual learning has thrown many curve balls at students this year. Professors are learning how to adapt, students are learning how to manage and internet companies are learning how to keep up. We’re all learning together.  Unfortunately, one thing that falls to the wayside is personal interaction where you can talk to your professor face-to-face, mask or no mask. While some colleges still have very large class sizes, some classes at AUM have the luxury of having small class sizes. With this being the case, it’s easier to create that relationship with your professor at AUM than at some larger schools.Because of COVID-19 and virtual learning, however, personal interaction is limited if not impossible. There are still some classes where the only interact...

Parler App Rises in Popularity as Twitter Alternative

BY: Evan Justice Parler, a micro-blogging social media service, has become the top trending app in both the Google Play and Apple Stores following the 2020 presidential election.   Parler has become very popular among conservatives who feel their voices are being silenced by large social media companies that allow liberal users to say whatever they want without any kind of repercussions. Described as a social media app that doesn’t limit free speech, Parler does not have the same restrictions on speech as Facebook and Twitter do. Because of this, many have labeled Parler as an echo chamber that could allow crazy conspiracy theories and racist rhetoric to spread. However, according to Parler policy, posts can and will be removed if they contain terrorist threats, ha...

Many people around the world have admitted that the holidays are not exactly the best time of year for their mental health. Whether it be problems with family, friends, or just life, it is very common for stress and depression to dampen your holiday mood. A survey by the American Psychological Association showed that thirty-eight percent of people said their stress level increased during the holiday season. Here are four things you can do this holiday season to cope with stress and depression. Keep your expectations manageable.  Be realistic. Jeopardy Host Alex Trebek Dies at 80

BY: Evan Justice On November 7th, 2020, the official Jeopardy Twitter account announced that Jeopardy’s longtime host Alex Trebek died at 80 years old.  Although the cause of Trebek’s death was not immediately announced, many speculated it may be related to his battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Trebek first announced his diagnosis on March 6, 2019, through a video posted on the official Jeopardy YouTube and Twitter accounts. Trebek stated in the video that he wanted to be the one to announce his diagnosis. Trebek stated, “It’s in keeping with my long-term policy of being open and transparent with our Jeopardy fanbase,” before announcing his diagnosis.  Over the course of the new year-and-a-half, Trebek posted updates about his condition and how he was feeling. AUM Athletics, College of Nursing and Health Sciences to Host Blood Drive

BY: Jessica Alldredge Montgomery, Ala. – Nov. 11, 2020 – In a time where everyone needs a little help, there are a lot of ways that AUM students can provide that help. Students can find little ways to give back to the community. Sometimes that means giving of their time, and sometimes that means giving of themselves. In this case, students have a chance to give of themselves literally.  AUM provides many opportunities throughout the year for students to get involved and help out their fellow man (or woman). This includes frequent blood drives on the main campus. There will be a blood drive on campus on Tuesday, November 17 from 10am to 4pm hosted by AUM Athletics and the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. Students wanting to donate blood will find the bloodmobile next to t...

What We Know Now: Advice to AUM Freshmen

BY: Jessica Alldredge Starting a new experience is daunting. Becoming familiar with a new place and a new routine can be frustrating. Sometimes, it turns out that we look back and say, “I wish I had known that when I went through it the first time.” When it feels like you’re the only person going through this experience, you may not be sure what to do, how to prepare, or who to turn to.  Being a freshman at AUM is no different. Sure, it’s a small school, and it’s not hard to get from one side of the campus to the other. That doesn’t stop some of us from showing up to class an hour early on the first day of class every semester just to make sure that we have the right classroom number in the right building at the right time.If you’re a freshman at AUM,  you’re in for an exc...

Is Spring Break Cancelled for AUM?

BY: Evan Justice Throughout the past few weeks, many colleges across the country have decided to cancel their spring breaks for the Spring 2021 semester. Recently, the University of Alabama and the University of South Alabama have decided to cancel their spring breaks as well.  In order to compensate for the loss of spring break, both universities decided they will begin their upcoming spring semester one week later. Although both campuses required students to test for the Coronavirus before returning to campus, no such requirement was included in either campus announcements for their plans for the upcoming spring semester. Image provided by travelpulse.com. The question remains: Will AUM follow in these footsteps and make the decision to cancel spring break? While no off...

Don’t Forget to Be Grateful

BY: Jessica Alldredge We have two months left in the year 2020. We’re so close to it being over. This year has brought a lot of challenges, changes and complications. It’s easy to be upset or think negatively about how difficult this year has been for everyone. While those issues shouldn’t be brushed aside, it’s important to take a moment to stop and think about the good things we can be thankful for. Even if you don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, it’s still a good practice to take the time to notice the little things and the big things that help make life good. Even when it feels not so good. Here are some ideas to get you started: This semester is almost over. You’re close to being finished with this particular educational challenge. School is about to come to end for a while, and you ca...
