Don’t Forget to Be Grateful

BY: Jessica Alldredge

We have two months left in the year 2020. We’re so close to it being over. This year has brought a lot of challenges, changes and complications. It’s easy to be upset or think negatively about how difficult this year has been for everyone.

While those issues shouldn’t be brushed aside, it’s important to take a moment to stop and think about the good things we can be thankful for. Even if you don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, it’s still a good practice to take the time to notice the little things and the big things that help make life good. Even when it feels not so good.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

This semester is almost over. You’re close to being finished with this particular educational challenge. School is about to come to end for a while, and you can have a much-needed mental break.

The weather is changing. It’s nice and cool outside. Even if that changes, like it tends to do sporadically here in Sweet Home Alabama, it’s cool right now. Here in the South, that’s something to be excited about.

We’ve learned things about ourselves. This year has been a mental test for everyone, and you may have learned some good things or some not so good things along the way. Either way, you’re growing. Sometimes growth hurts, but it’s something that should be celebrated.

There are important people in our lives. We all have someone who comes to mind. It could be anyone— family members you have or the family you’ve chosen for yourself, instructors, friends, professors or colleagues. These people make breathing and living a little easier. They made this year a little less strange.

Essentially, just take a step back and try to appreciate how far you’ve made it, even if you lost something along the way. You’re here and you’re doing great. Positivity isn’t always easy, but it’s good to make time to look around you and notice the rays of sunshine that show up when you look for them.

As the season changes and we get ready to start another year, don’t forget to slow down. Grab a friend, hug a loved one, pass that test, take a deep breath, and don’t forget to be grateful.

So, what are you grateful for?
