Fighting the Flu

Fighting the Flu

BY: Caitlin Gallagher Flu season is upon us, and unfortunately, it does not discriminate. If you’re like me, you cannot afford to miss classes due to the unwelcome virus. Luckily, there are a few things you can do to eliminate the chances of catching the flu and other airborne illnesses. Washing your hands with warm water and soap multiple times throughout the day is the old-fashioned way to stop the spreading of germs and viruses. I know‒ parents probably told you that when you were younger, but it’s tried and true. If you aren’t able to wash your hands more than just when you use the restroom, hand sanitizer is another great way to keep germs off your hands. Personal and travel size sanitizers are available at supermarkets and have really convenient holders that are easily att...

The Importance of Internships

You just got that degree and you're ready to dive head first into your field, but you can't find a job. Why is that? Employers tell you that you don't meet the requirements. You need experience-- more experience than you probably acquired in your entire college career. Most people think that they can find jobs instantly after college, but that's not always the case. There is an extreme need of experience when it comes to getting a job in your field. Internships can open doors to prominent job positions in the future. Entry-level positions are requiring some type of experience in the desired field now more than ever. The Career Development Center is readily available to help you find out what’s available, whether opportunities paid or non-paid, and what the most important thing abou...

You Can’t Sit With Us

You Can’t Sit With Us

BY: Taniya Frazier Most people know the phrase, “You can’t sit with us,” from the classic 2009 film Mean Girls. The phrase is referring to someone being unable to socialize or physically be around a certain group. Unfortunately, this type of thinking has translated into reality. I have seen cliques and in-groups that do not accept other people that don’t align with their mindset or perspective. College shouldn’t be a social pyramid--this isn’t high school.  It’s time to break the stigma of cliques. AUM is an inclusive campus. People should be able to feel welcomed, regardless of where they come from or who they are. Why don't we leave the cliques and stereotypes in high school? College is much more than sticking within your in-group or co-culture. This is the time to explore surroun...

AUM’s Honors Program Giving Back

BY: Daaiyah Latham The AUM Honors Program Food Pantry was created to help students in need of food. The program has been feeding the campus since 2016. Sonni Gunnels, a former Honor student, formed the idea. Gunnels noticed that she and others were struggling towards the end of the month with food scarcity.  In 2012, she began to pass around confidential surveys to get statistics of the food insecurity around campus. Gunnels conducted a second survey before she graduated so the school could be "aware of the pantry's presence on campus." The surveys included questions based on the students’ experience with food insecurity, such as, “How often do you experience food insecurity within a given month?” Gunnels found the space where the food could be stored, and that space has been feedin...

They did not start off as psychology majors. Instead, as they progressed through their academic years, they discovered psychology was the right path. Alyssah’s goal is to get her PhD in clinical psychology. She is currently looking at graduate school to make the next step. As for JR, he wants to be a hospital chaplain. He is looking to study at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. They both enjoy the tight-knit community here...
