Favorite Hallmark Christmas Movies

BY: Molly Gray If you did not already know, the Hallmark Channel is already playing their new Christmas movies, as well as the classic ones that we all know and love. As usual, they have two channels where you can watch these movies. The first one is Hallmark Movies and Mysteries, which plays what I call the “sad movies.” Truthfully, they are the movies that are very heartwarming. The other is the Hallmark Channel, which plays movies that can be considered romantic comedies. Hallmark has something for everyone this Christmas season. Here’s what I found to be some favorite Hallmark movies. Ashley Taylor, AUM student and Hallmark Christmas movie-lover, says that her favorite new Hallmark Christmas movie so far is Merry and Bright. This movie has Jodie Sweetin (Full House) and Andrew W...
The History of Christmas Trees

The History of Christmas Trees

BY: Molly Gray It is getting close to the time of year in which you will start putting up your Christmas tree to get you in the Christmas spirit. One thing you probably do not do is wonder where the Christmas tree tradition started. The fact is that there are many different theories about Christmas tree origins. Here is the history of Christmas trees. Evergreen trees were used for many years by Pagans to celebrate winter festivals. Some would even use the branches to decorate their homes for the winter solstice. Though the official time period when Fir trees were used for Christmas trees is unknown, Northern Europeans were known to hang the trees upside down from the ceiling as their Christmas trees more than 1000 years ago. Both Estonia and Latvia claim that they had the first Chri...

A Warhawk’s Winter Break

BY: Anthony Flournoy School can be very stressful for students, but sometimes self-reflection can help de-stress. Self-reflection can involve congratulating yourself on another successful semester in your college career, or maybe looking back on your previous work and focus on enhancing certain skills. This gives students time to analyze themselves and work on shortcomings.  The semester is finally coming to an end, and Winter Break is approaching. Even though the upcoming break could be boring, there are many things you can do throughout the break to stay productive. You could obtain a temporary job, volunteer, spend time with family, or spend time reflecting and preparing for the upcoming semester. All of these things can keep you busy through the upcoming winter break. Re...

Volunteering During the Holidays

BY: Kaleria Jackson It’s that time of year again— the time where everyone is filled with cheer and the desire to give back to others. Even though we should give back to others all year round, this time of year is special to many. As people who are fortunate enough to have the things that we have, we should find it in our hearts to give to others in need. Here are a few ways we can give back this year.  Adopt a Family  If you adopt a family in need for the holidays, the family will write a wishlist of things they want, and you will take the list and try to get as many things on the list as you can.  Host a toy drive  Many parents or caregivers cannot afford to give their children toys for the holidays. Hosting a toy drive can allow you to give a child a s...

Keeping Up Your Diet Through the Holidays

BY: Caitlin Gallagher The holidays. If you’re like me, you start thinking about turkeys and hams and all the fixings around August. In my humble opinion, the holidays are the best part of the year. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the cherry on top of the green and red cornucopia: New Years. Sometimes, though, we tend to compromise our diets and healthy living for the two-month celebration. We say that we’ll just splurge for the one day and hop back on the healthy train as soon as the day is done. However, falling off the wagon for one day can set back our fitness or dieting progress tenfold.  Although ham and turkey are relatively healthy for you, we sometimes go off the deep-end when it comes to sides and fixings. The holidays are a perfect time to load up on carbohydrates, whic...

AMC Offers New Subscription Service

BY: Brandon Barker This past October, AMC Theatres began a new subscription service that is set to battle top on-demand streaming platforms like Google Play and iTunes. With thousands of titles available to the customer, AMC is definitely a go-to entertainment company.  AMC is the world’s largest theatre chain and wants to expand its reach to more consumers. Starting a new service with customers already familiar with their brand is a huge advantage because they have access to their information. AMC will offer over 2000 titles, with new ones added every month just like Amazon and other streaming companies. As of right now, you can access these on Smart TVs, Rokus, or the company’s website. Signing up with them automatically makes you a part of AMC Stubs, which is their rewards p...

AUM Men’s Basketball vs. Florida Tech University

BY: Randy Dunn After an unfortunate loss the night before, the Warhawks were back in action on Saturday afternoon against the Panthers of Florida Tech. This was only the second meeting of the two schools— the Warhawks won the previous matchup in 2018 (71-65). Knowing they let their first game slip away, the Warhawks hit the floor running against the Panthers. Senior guard #5 Carlos Bell put the team up 21 points while adding five rebounds, two assists, a block, and a steal. On top of his stellar play, other solid players like junior guard #2 Darrion Taylor added 10 assists and nine points. The big man protecting the paint, junior center #31 Aaron Reddick, had a quite an opening night and helped his squad by putting up 11 points and 10 rebounds. The Warhawks had a solid first half,...

AUM Men’s Basketball vs. Rollins College

BY: Randy Dunn AUM’s men’s basketball team kicked off their 2019 season against the Tars of Rollins College. The gymnasium went into an uproar as the Warhawks took the court and formed their pre-game lay-up line, and as the shot clock wound down, the excitement continued to grow. This was the second matchup between the Warhawks and the Tars— in 2018, the Tars defeated AUM (86-76). The Warhawks started the first half off strong, putting up 32 points up to Rollins’ 26, with a strong showing from senior Darrion Taylor (19 points, 4 assists, and 2 rebounds) and redshirt junior Stanley Davis (21 points, 2 assists, and a rebound). Although the Warhawks’ first half was strong, they came a little lackluster in the second half, scoring only 39 points. Rollins scored 50 points, which gave ...
