Volunteering During the Holidays

BY: Kaleria Jackson

It’s that time of year again— the time where everyone is filled with cheer and the desire to give back to others. Even though we should give back to others all year round, this time of year is special to many. As people who are fortunate enough to have the things that we have, we should find it in our hearts to give to others in need. Here are a few ways we can give back this year.

  • Adopt a Family

If you adopt a family in need for the holidays, the family will write a wishlist of things they want, and you will take the list and try to get as many things on the list as you can.

  • Host a toy drive

Many parents or caregivers cannot afford to give their children toys for the holidays. Hosting a toy drive can allow you to give a child a small piece of joy.

  • Volunteer at a Soup Kitchen

Another great way to volunteer is serving a warm meal to those in need at a homeless shelter or at a local soup kitchen.

  • Clothing Drive

The weather is slowly dropping, which means needing warmer clothing is needed. Many people do not own the proper clothing items to get them through the winter. Donate hats, gloves, jackets, and more items to help them get through the season.

  • Visit a Senior

During the holidays, not many senior citizens receive visitors. Brighten up their day by coming to talk or simply spending time with them.

Any of these options will be a great way to help others in need. Giving back makes an impact on those in need, but also on you. This season is known to be quite lonely for some people because they might not have friends or family to share the holidays with. It only takes a second to bring a smile to a person’s face, because it is always better to give than to receive. As the season goes on and the new year starts, try to keep this motto in mind.
