Warhawks men’s soccer team stands at the top regionally and seventh nationally

The Auburn University at Montgomery men’s soccer team sits as the #1 team in the South Region and #7 in nationally as stated Tuesday in an AUM Athletics press release.

After a strong week where AUM went 2-0 against Gulf South Conference opponents, the Warhawks are now ranked #7 in The United Soccer Coaches poll released on Tuesday, moving up from #10.

The Warhawks started off this past week down in Mobile, earning a 3-0 win over the Spring Hill Badgers on Wednesday. Graduate wing Fabio Guerreiro kicked off the Warhawks scoring by hitting a goal in the 32^nd minute to take a 1-0 lead. AUM would go up 2-0 in the 64^th minute thanks to a goal from senior forward Sean O Donnell. Freshman leg wing Brennan Greer would finish the Warhawk scoring by scoring his first goal of his career in the 76^th minute.

Fifth year senior goalkeeper Jakob Buhrkuhl recorded two saves on defense leading to his third shutout of the season.

Senior forward Jaden McKree and sophomore defender Harrington Arnette both recorded an assist as well. On Saturday they returned home to pitch another shutout, beating the Christan Brothers University Buccaneers 1-0.

Senior midfielder Mikayil Bacar Said scored the only goal of the game with junior forward Benjamin Hoffmann getting the lone assist. Buhrkuhl had four more saves to help lead AUM to its second straight shutout and fourth overall on the year.

The Warhawks now stand at 7-1-0 on the season while being 4-0-0 in GSC play after a 2-1 win at University at Montevallo on Thursday.

Head coach Mathew Thorne said that character is a reason for the team’s early success. “We went through some games with some adversity where we didn’t start the game well and went behind and found a way to win.”

Thorne also said to the student body and to fans of AUM to show up and get loud. “The more fans we have in our stadium it helps our lads on the field.”
