Opinion: Let me pay in cash

Opinion: Let me pay in cash

photo courtesy of Patrick Eiland When I returned to Auburn University at Montgomery in the fall of 2024 the school had changed a lot since I graduated in 2015. The way you pay now for everything on campus is the one thing that drives me crazy. I’m someone who never liked dealing with credit cards. The hassle you must go through to set one up, how there was a middleman, and the stolen credit card scare. I was never a fan.   Handing someone a few bills was simple, and I knew they got my money. So when I came back…

AUM food pantry fights hunger

photo courtesy of Julia M. Cameron on pexels.com Did you know nearly 40% of college students face food insecurity? Food insecurity among college students happens for many reasons, some being the cost of food and lack of resources for students to get access to food in non-traditional ways.  The AUM Food Pantry serves anywhere from 75-100 students a week, but Food Pantry Chair Sarah Bagget said numbers vary. “We may have days where we serve 40 students and others where we may serve 10, so it really depends,” she said.  The number of students that visit the pantry also has…

AUM squirrels: pizza thieves, trash can jumpers and campus celebrities

Squirrel rummaging around in leaves on AUM's campus (photo courtesy of Jordan White). Squirrels on AUM’s campus are not afraid to throw down a slice of pizza from the Warhawk Cafe or even jump scare students between classes. “They were jumping out of trash cans since I could remember being on campus,” said Kayla Smith, an AUM alumna. Data backs up what students notice on campus, as squirrels often thrive in urban settings. According to Fox Squirrel Survival in Urban and Rural Environments, a 2010 article from the Journal of Wildlife Management, studies of rural and urban mammal populations suggest…

Flammable Vol. 1: The Beginning

BY: Alecia Hicks Music fuels our souls. It is what makes us sing. It is what makes us dance. Music can bring us tears, or it can make us smile from ear to ear. The music industry is always changing and bringing forth new icons and legends for people to look up to. Macio Malone (also known as MC Burn Em), a student at AUM, is looking to be one of the many legends that we look up to in the music industry. Malone was influenced by music at a very young age. At 13 years old, he began writing…

Student Spotlight: Air Force ROTC with Savannah Cowart & Derek Paul

BY: Allison Stewart With Veteran’s Day just around the corner, it is important to reflect on our nation’s military.  Dedicating their lives to ensure our safety and freedom, our veterans protect the livelihoods that Americans tend to take for granted. This upcoming Veteran’s Day, make it a priority to reach out to those who have served our country and say, “Thank you!” Simple gratitude holds great power.   As we thank our military, it is also important to reach out to those who are currently serving or are preparing to do so. At AUM, there are two ROTC programs: Army Reserve…

AUM provides the tools for all types of students, whether they are traditional, nontraditional or transfers.  Antoinique Smith and Jesse Guffin did not begin their college journey at AUM. Antoinique transferred from De Anza College in California in 2018. Jesse transferred from the main campus of Auburn University a little over two years ago. Now, both aspiring Warhawks are pursuing their degrees in sociology.  At the start of her academic career, Antoinique knew sociology…

Should Schools Pay Student Athletes?

Should Schools Pay Student Athletes?

BY: Brandon Barker For years, people have been saying that student athletes should be paid, but there has not been much action until now. There is a bill in California that will make it legal for student athletes to profit off their name, image, and likeness. Although the bill will not go into effect until 2023, college sports recruit and schedule games years ahead of time. This will give schools in California a strategic advantage ahead of other states who have not passed this bill.  This is a big deal for college sports, and it could change how we look…
