AUM vs. Montevallo Recap

BY: Allison Singleterry Auburn University at Montgomery men’s soccer team is now 3rd in the Gulf South Conference standings after beating University of Montevallo in a rematch on Tuesday. They now have a conference record of 4-0-2. Montevallo is currently ranked eighth in the GSC standings and has a conference record of 3-3. AUM originally played Montevallo on Oct. 18. Montevallo was up 2-1 and just after halftime, one of the lights on AUM’s field cut out. Regulation requires the whole field to be properly lit for the entire duration of the game. After waiting about an hour, they decided to reschedule the game for Oct. 22. Brazilian Junior, Lucas Batistela, scored with 38 seconds left in the match for a 1-0 win over Montevallo. AUM outshot Montevallo 19 to five. Seven of those sh...

AUM Women’s Soccer

BY: Randy Dunn    Soccer is a sport in which everyone must be in one accord to accomplish the same goal, which is to win. Unfortunately for AUM’s women’s soccer team, they are having trouble putting together a complete game. So far this year, the Lady Warhawks have mustard up just one win, which leaves them sitting with an overall record of 1-11 and  a conference record of 1-6 (0-6 at home and 1-5 away.) Although the record doesn’t show exactly great play, there are a couple of bright spots to look forward to.     Out of 23 total players, 16 are underclassmen, which gives them time to develop and learn the system better so they all can add a dynamic role to the team as the seasons to come. There is a positive outlook when it comes to players l...

Gaining Experience with AUM Athletics as a Student Worker

BY: Randy Dunn AUM gives its students opportunities to gain experience in their field and put money in their pockets as student workers. I am the announcer for AUM volleyball and soon to be basketball, and it’s giving me early experience in the analyst and announcer field of my job, which I intend to pursue once I graduate from AUM.     On top of giving me experience and money, this position brings me closer to the fans and AUM. Now when I walk around campus, I get random people asking me, “Hey are you the volleyball announcer?” and with a small smile I embrace it and say, “Yes I am.” It makes me feel good because I put a lot of energy into keeping the gymnasium energetic and entertained. Also, I’ve learned the game of volleyball to where now I can talk to others...

Should Schools Pay Student Athletes?

BY: Brandon Barker For years, people have been saying that student athletes should be paid, but there has not been much action until now. There is a bill in California that will make it legal for student athletes to profit off their name, image, and likeness. Although the bill will not go into effect until 2023, college sports recruit and schedule games years ahead of time. This will give schools in California a strategic advantage ahead of other states who have not passed this bill.  This is a big deal for college sports, and it could change how we look at the NCAA. In 2013, NCAA video games were discontinued because of numerous legal cases concerning use of likeness and image. In 2015, there was a $60 million settlement  that was considered a win for many former student ...

AUM Volleyball vs West Georgia

BY: Brandon Barker AUM battled against University of West Georgia this past Saturday but fell short. This (3-0) loss ended the Warhawks’ three-game winning streak. This road test proved to be one of AUM’s toughest matchups so far.  The West Georgia Wolves are currently (9-7) and undefeated in the Gulf South Conference, with a record of (4-1) at home and a (3-4) record at neutral locations. The Wolves hit .227 on the day, with a dominant performance from one of their freshman. UWG held the Warhawks to a .120 hitting percentage, which led to an easy match win.  AUM’s conference record is now (3-2), and the Warhawks hope to improve that in the coming week. Even with the loss, there were some standout performers from the game: outside hitter Dariona Dash and setter Isadora ...
