AUM Warhawks suffers heartbreaking loss to Saint Leo in extra innings

MONTGOMERY, Ala – Auburn University at Montgomery’s (AUM) baseball team faced off against Saint Leo University Lions last Friday. It was the first time these two teams had played against each other in a doubleheader matchup. In a doubleheader against Saint Leo, AUM’s baseball team lost both games, with a final score of 9-8 in game one followed by an 8-0 loss against the Lions in game two. 

AUM’s Wade Chandler, Clay Slagle, Grant Hickman, Tommy Vickers, Michael Myers, and Brett Pitts allowed 16 hits combined in the first doubleheader loss against the Lions. 

The Warhawks started off strong, with Clayton Phillips scoring a run in the first inning with a sacrificed RBI, while Zach Dew and Jackson Ceman both added an RBI of their own to give the Warhawks a 3-1 lead against the Lions. 

The Warhawks maintained the game’s pace for four innings, increasing their lead. In the seventh inning, Kasey Clark, the Gulf South Conference (GSC) player of the week, hit an RBI single in the middle of the field, leading to Ceman bringing in a run for the Warhawks and giving them a 4-1 lead. Cooper Doughman also hit the ball down the line to the left line leading to Clark and Dew scoring and giving the Warhawks a 6-1 lead. 

However, the Lions came back strong against the Warhawks in the eighth inning, scoring five runs, including a home run, to tie the game at 6-6. In the ninth inning, Brody Syer hit a single to the right side of the field, leading to Dew scoring and tying the game at 7-7. The teams continued to play for 11 innings. In the 10th inning, Jake Spivey hit a home run, tying the game for Warhawks at 8-8, but the Lions managed to score a run in the 11th inning, securing their win over the Warhawks. 

The loss brought AUM’s overall record to 16-22 on the season, with a 10-11 record in GSC play. AUM’s baseball team will play their next game at home against Albany State University on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
