Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) is encouraging graduating students to take part in a tradition aimed at strengthening long-term alumni engagement: the Class Gift Program – $20.26 Graduating Class Medallion.

Ashlyn Arp, Director of Alumni Relations at AUM, said the initiative is about more than a one-time contribution. “It’s a symbolic gesture that marks the transition from student to alum,” Arp explained. “We want students to understand their relationship with AUM continues after graduation.”

According to Arp, the Office of Advancement works to build connections between students and the university well before they graduate. Through events, networking opportunities, and the class gift program, students are introduced early to the idea of giving back.

The medallion itself serves as both a keepsake and a symbol. Students who participate in the class gift receive the medallion to wear during commencement, representing their first step into the alumni community. “Even small contributions matter,” Arp said. “When students come together to give, it creates something meaningful for future classes.”

National data reflects the importance of this kind of early engagement. According to the Institute for Public Relations, only about 8% of recent college graduates donate to their institutions, highlighting the challenge universities face in building a culture of giving early on. The report notes that “relationships with alumni cannot be a one-way street,” emphasizing the need for institutions to actively foster engagement.

At AUM, connecting the class gift to the medallion helps address that challenge. Rather than viewing the donation as a simple transaction, students are encouraged to see it as the beginning of a lifelong connection. Contributions from students and alumni support scholarships, campus improvements, and programs that benefit future Warhawks.

Alumni participation also plays a role in how universities are evaluated. Higher participation rates signal strong alumni loyalty and can positively impact institutional reputation. Arp emphasized that participation, not the amount, is what truly matters.

As graduation approaches, Arp hopes students leave with a lasting sense of connection. “Graduation isn’t the end,” she said. “It’s the beginning of a new relationship with AUM.”

With initiatives like the Graduating Class Medallion, AUM continues working to ensure that relationship starts strong.
