Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) has welcomed the appointment of Jon Plefka as the new head coach for the women’s basketball team. He is replacing Steve Kenner, who was the interim head coach for the women’s team. Plefka is an experienced coach with an impressive track record, having previously worked with Post University in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC). As a college athlete, he played basketball for Bob Knight at Texas Tech University and also played baseball for the Texas Tech who was coached by Larry Hays and was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels to play Major League Baseball (MLB).
Plefka had a successful five-year stint as the head coach of Post University’s women’s basketball team, where he achieved an impressive 84-55 overall record. Under his leadership, the Eagles were runner up in a conference championship this past season and made a championship appearance and winning a division title, marking the team’s first-ever division title in the 2019-20 season. The team also maintained an outstanding academic record with a cumulative GPA of over 3.0.
In an interview, Plefka revealed his coaching style and plans for the team. He emphasized the importance of discipline and a strong defense, along with an up-tempo style of play that includes shooting from beyond the arc. He acknowledged that success is a process that requires effort and commitment, and that achieving their goals would require a day-by-day approach.
Plefka expressed his excitement about being a part of the AUM and Montgomery community and his eagerness to actively participate, encouraging students to introduce themselves if they see him on campus. He believes that everyone including himself puts in the effort and buys into the program, success will come eventually. Plefka emphasized that the process takes time, and success won’t happen overnight.
Overall, Plefka’s appointment brings new energy and expertise to the AUM women’s basketball team. With his experience and passion for the game, he is poised to lead the AUM women’s basketball team to success both on and off the court.
