MONTGOMERY, Ala. -— Auburn University at Montgomery’s Communication & Theatre Department held their fifth annual Audio and Video Storytelling multimedia camp June 8-11 allowing area teens to explore podcasting, TV production and voice acting.
“This year’s camp was an intensive and fun week filled with audio, video, radio drama and media tours,” said AUM communication lecturer and camp director Katherine Irwin.
Students from Prattville High School, St. James High School, Pike Road High School, Evangel Christian Academy, LAMP High School, Percy Julian High School, Brew Tech Magnet High School, Success Unlimited High School, Booker T. Washington High School, and Stanhope Elmore High School all came together to learn how to speak on camera, record both audio and video, and edit to make their own projects come to life.
The select group of attendees also got a chance to see real world communication jobs in action. On Tuesday, June 9, the high school group visited Cumulus Radio in downtown and got to be on air with DJ Rick Hendrick on 95.1 The Fox. And the next day, they toured the WSFA studio with Marketing Producer Tim Skipper and even got to stand in to watch the WSFA 12 News “Alabama Live” broadcast with anchor and AUM alumna Bethany Davis.
On the final camp day, campers submitted their projects with a chance at winning a $750 scholarship from AUM’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. The winner was Prattville High School student Jayla Fennell with her short silent film titled “Following.” Second place went to Zoe Cortell for her podcast “Predictions of the next Big Brother episode” and third place went to Calea Barnett for her podcast “Behind Closed Doors”.
Irwin said of the students: “We had such a wonderful group of high schoolers who were creative, kind and interested in learning all they could about media production and careers.”
