Letter from the summer co-editors

By Sofia Cerebuch and Patrick Eiland

Hi everyone, I wanted to introduce myself. I’m Sofia Cerebuch, and in May I was appointed Editor-in-Chief of The AUMnibus. This summer, I’ll be serving in this role alongside Patrick as co-editor. As you well know, the flow of information is never-ending, news is always just around the corner, and so are we. For now, at least until the start of the fall semester, the news will be coming to you from a city much farther away: Trieste, Italy.

To give you a little background on myself, I’m a senior international student majoring in communication and journalism. Until this past spring semester, I played volleyball for our university, two sides of the same coin, both built on discipline, teamwork and the desire to tell a story all the way through, whether on the court or on a newspaper page. Becoming Editor-in-Chief as a bilingual student is a major milestone for me, a recognition of the commitment and sacrifices that, as I’ve discovered firsthand, always pay off. I hope to contribute to this newspaper with a fresh perspective and openness, shaped by my dual identity and my very diverse life experiences.

My goal for the summer is simple, to be the voice and eyes of the campus, bringing truth and transparency to our university, regardless of distance. Because a well-functioning editorial team never stops and knows no boundaries, not even when one of its editors is an ocean away.

Happy summer to everyone. I’m Patrick Eiland, the sports editor/co-editor for the AUMnibus.  I’m currently here at AUM on my second degree as a communications/journalism major after graduating in 2015 with a degree in psychology. While I ended up falling out of love with psychology, I did learn one thing about myself while in that department. I love writing so being able to do so while talking about almost any subject I want to make this fun to me.

To quote the late great Stan Lee: “Whatever you do; you should do what you most want to do. Too many people don’t really do what their heart’s desire is. If you do what you really want to do; you feel like you’re playing.”

I took that quote to heart and since then, I’ve been able to do so while going out to meet people and experience things such as sitting in the press box at QV Lowe Field to cover our baseball team amongst many other things. It’s been an amazing experience in my short time in this department.

I hope your summer classes go smoothly, and that you don’t let the heat take its toll on you too much. I’m taking my summer easy as I get worn out quickly in these Alabama summers, I blame that on being from south New Jersey, but still keeping myself busy writing for the paper. I’m looking forward to covering and highlighting our athletics department and various groups around the AUM campus. All I ask is that you support us and the amazing work we do here.  I look forward to seeing you around the campus.
