Counseling and Health Promotion Services Produces Back to Back Events for Mental Health.

BY: Brittany Vallely MONTGOMERY, Ala.- College is a stressful time because some students are having to keep track with work, paying their bills, attending extracurricular, exercise, sleep, social life, and on top of that focusing on their school work. All of this can be overwhelming, but counseling services are giving students the opportunity to take a break from the chaos at Cookies and Coffee with Counselors and Mindfulness Group on the same day. Coffee and Cookies with Counselors is an opportunity for students, faculty and staff members to get to know the counselors and interns. Individuals can find out about the promotion services and what they offer, along with enjoying free refreshments. Greta Chambless, Associate Director of Clinical Services, says they are happy to sh...

A Brief Look into the Origins of AUM

BY: Kory Hobbs Auburn University at Montgomery is currently home to over 5,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The campus sits on a beautiful 500-acre lot on the eastern side of Montgomery. The success of the university and campus would not have been possible if it wasn’t for what unfolded in the late 1960’s. On a quest to expand higher education within the city of Montgomery, Charles Brightwell, the president of the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce looked around the city for the best candidates. The University of Alabama had an educational building near Maxwell Airforce Base off Bell Street that seemed like a logical place for Brightwell to begin his pursuit. However, when Brightwell reached out to the university they were not very keen on the idea of expanding throughout ...

BY: Marcus Godbee Auburn University Montgomery has awarded Dr. Hilary Gamble a grant to complete a study about television viewing. The study will analyze binge watching and how it affects people in their viewer experience. In this study, qualified participants will watch a total of three episodes of the TV show “Dexter” over the course of two weeks. The participants will be divided into two groups. One group will watch one episode per week; the other group will watch all three episodes at once. “I want to see how binge viewers differ from weekly TV viewers in how they experience the show,” Gamble said. “Whether it changes their beliefs about violence and crime. After watching each episode, participants will be asked several questions about their viewing experience. Participants ...

All Hail Queen Ann

BY: Morgan Thayer Mobile is where it all started, the original Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras is a time for celebration, beads, moon pies and elaborate floats. The original Mardi Gras began in 1703 when French settlers celebrated at Twenty-Seven Mile Bluff, the first settlement in the city. The celebration in 1711 included a parade, believed to be the first parade in North America, was nothing like the celebration of floats we see today. Over the years, the parades have become more over the top and involved bringing us what we see today in Mobile. Throughout Mobile, masked parading societies otherwise known as mystic societies, fill parades with mystery and excitement.  In 1830, the first masked parading society in America appeared in Mobile when Michael Kraft formed the Cowbellian de Rakin So...

Battling Depression in College

BY: Taniya Frazier College comes with a lot of new experiences, challenges, and adventures. However, there is one thing that creeps up on college students that no one wants, depression. A dark cloud that can ruin a person’s outlook and hovers over everything. College students are like gymnasts. We have to juggle academics, a social life, and work. We have to handle everything as if we are on a balance beam. If one part of your life becomes too heavy, you are at a risk of falling. If another part of your life isn’t equally balanced, how are you going to regain your balance? Depression is like this. When things get off balance or goes unplanned, it’s more than just a disappointment. Things begin to pile up on your plate until you feel like everything is your fault or you didn’t do so...

#WarhawkBuddy

BY: Taniya Frazier College is a new journey for all students. This journey will develop new interests, discoveries, and trials. I don’t think it’s one that anyone takes alone. Friends are crucial to a student’s outlook on college. Besides academics, a student’s social life has a bigger impact on their college experience. Through this journey, it helps to have a buddy to talk with and experience life together. The people you meet in college will grow to be some of your closest friends. Your ‘Warhawk Buddy’ will more than likely be with you through majority or all of your college experience. A ‘Warhawk Buddy’ is more than just a classmate. This person, or people, is your go-to for all things college. Your lunch buddy. Study partner. Your number one person to take to any event. I ...

Club and Organization Spotlight: NAACP

BY: Taniya Frazier On AUM’s campus, we have over 60+ clubs and organizations. There is always some type of activity or event going on. This week, I want to shed light on an organization’s achievement. The National Association of the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) organization on campus has been recognized for their successful progression. The Auburn Montgomery Chapter of NAACP has recently received an award for the ‘Most Improved Chapter’ from the “Alabama Youth & College Division of the NAACP” at the 66th Annual State Convention. The chapter, here on campus, currently has approximately 82 members! Since their reactivation back in 2017, they have had about 30-40 inspiring and educational events. Since 2017, the chapter’s numbers have grown and they are getting...
