Club and Organization Spotlight: NAACP

BY: Taniya Frazier

On AUM’s campus, we have over 60+ clubs and organizations. There is always some type of activity or event going on. This week, I want to shed light on an organization’s achievement. The National Association of the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) organization on campus has been recognized for their successful progression. The Auburn Montgomery Chapter of NAACP has recently received an award for the ‘Most Improved Chapter’ from the “Alabama Youth & College Division of the NAACP” at the 66th Annual State Convention.

The chapter, here on campus, currently has approximately 82 members! Since their reactivation back in 2017, they have had about 30-40 inspiring and educational events. Since 2017, the chapter’s numbers have grown and they are getting more recognition on and off campus. Each month they are going out into the surrounding areas for community service.

The body of a great group has to have a great leader. In this case, we have tons of them. The current leadership team includes Toria Carter, Keiona Lee, Terrell Andrews, Joleesha Monroe, Khalilah Ashley, Jaena O’Kelley, Alexis Mitchell, and Johnesha Wright. Each leader does their part so that the chapter can run smoothly and hopefully expand their reach locally and possibly nationally.

The national organization was founded February 12, 1909. They have over 500,000 members across the world. The club’s motto is as follows: “we are the largest and oldest; the baddest and the boldest; most loved and most hated; the most feared the most revered; the most cussed and disgust civil rights organization in America.”

The mission of NAACP is to, “secure the political, educational, social, and economic quality of rights and order to eliminate race based discrimination and ensure the health of well being of all persons.” – National Website of NAACP
