For Better or For Worse: Juggling A New Marriage and Deployment

“When he told me that he would be deployed, I was a wreck for a few days,” my friend, Hannah Wolf, told me last week over Face Time when we discussed her husband’s recent six-month deployment to Turkey. At the time of his departure, the couple had not even been married a year yet, and Hannah knew that six months would drag by slowly. She was not alone, however; thousands of military spouses endure deployments every year. According to the Sloan Work and Family Research Network, over 50 percent of military marriages undergo deployment and only 43 percent of military spouses feel that they can cope adequately with a 6 to 7 month deployments. Adjusting to married life is difficult as it is but being physically separated for half a year or longer only adds to the challenges. Myles and Hannah...

Editorial: Southern Hospitality, Just a Way of Life

Southern Hospitality isn’t just a saying or a catchphrase it almost becomes a way of life, when you grow up in the South. Growing up in the smallest of cities in East Alabama- so small and quaint, even finding it on the map would prove to be challenging. Many of us were raised to respect our elders. The common courtesy to say “yes ma’am” and “no sir”. Southern hospitality is just a way of life. Weather it is sipping lemonade or sweet tea on your front porch or having Sunday dinner at grandma’s house. Southern hospitality has several trends that follow along with it. Politeness is a charming key to southern hospitality. Even before we were old enough to count to five or say our ABC’s, we knew how to say please and thank you. Good home cooking, hospitality, and food in the south go hand i...

Editorial: Are You Color Blind?

What does it mean to be color blind? According to Google, the definition of color blind is, “not influenced by racial prejudice.” Basically, that means you do not notice someone’s race when you first meet them. A couple of months ago I attended one of the many, “Being Black in America” panels Housing and Residence life host once a semester and it was intriguing. To paraphrase what our host that night said, “white people act like they do not see color because if they did it would provoke white guilt, something we do not want to feel.” So, I wondered, “Is someone’s color the first thing you notice when you meet them?” I posed this question to my Twitter followers and Facebook friends. 58 people voted in my twitter poll. 67% said, “yes” while 33% said, “no.” On Facebook, 23 people said, “...

Another Winning Season for AUM Softball

As February comes to a close, the Warhawks softball team sits at a 5-2 record. Starting the season off with not only a win, but a 9-0 shutout against the University of Mobile in the first tournament of the season was definitely the start the Warhawks wanted to get. The Warhawks finished the Gulf Coast invitational tournament with a 3-1 record, falling only to the University of North Georgia with a nail biting 5-4 score. In their second tournament of the season, the GSC Opening Weekend Festival, the Warhawks came out on top again with a 2-1 record. While the Warhawks came up short against the University of North Alabama, they clutched the win against Mississippi College and Union University. With a new season, there will always come new challenges as well as new teammates. For freshman H...

AUM Tennis Season in Full Swing

AUM’s tennis teams recently approached the beginning of a new season. The 2018 season will be an exciting and competitive one for both the men and women’s teams. Yair Banuelos is the head coach for both teams. His goal is to prepare the men and women physically and mentally in order to be successful among other teams. “Fitness is going to be important for the long battles that we will have against top teams,” says Coach Banuelos. He believes the AUM tennis program has the talent to upset and win against higher rank schools. Both the men and women tennis programs have returning players. Three males will rejoin the men’s team, and one female will return to the women’s. Coach Banuelos says his expectations are higher for the returning player because he knows their capabilities and experien...

Backstage Spotlight: Marcus Godbee

When watching a movie or play, the focus and praises are typically directed towards the actors, but those behind the camera, curtain, lights or construction of the production are sometimes left out of the congratulatory applause. Those who aren’t center stage and lurk in the shadows of backstage are just as important to the success, and failure, of any production just as much as the spotlight stealing actor on stage. This isn’t Marcus Godbee’s first time being a part of the backstage crew at Theatre AUM. He has directed scenes for Theatre AUM’s Liberty & Justice and was the Assistant Director for Woyzeck. Marcus is currently working on the brand-new play Weightless, written by Meghan Reimers and directed by Neil David Seibel as the Stage Manager and Sound Designer; roles he has never...

Town Hall Meeting About Athletics Fee Raises Greater Student Concerns About Communication

After a recent town hall meeting conducted by the Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) Student Government Association (SGA) and AUM Athletics Department, held on Tues., Feb. 13, 2018 at 5 p.m. in Warhawk Alley, greater student concerns were raised about the efficiency and effectiveness of communication to AUM audiences, including undergraduate students. Students initially expressed concerns at the first impromptu town hall meeting about the athletics fee held by SGA without athletics representation on Tues. Jan. 30 at 6 p.m. in Warhawk Alley. AUM Athletic Director Jessie Rosa said that after the initial senate meeting held on Mon. Jan. 29 in Warhawk Alley, where SGA student senators voted to pass the athletic fee proposal SGA “…decided to host a town hall. We [Athletics] had just gott...
