How Is AUM Adjusting to Covid-19 on Campus?

BY: Jayla Brown Coronavirus slammed the nation back in spring of this year, shutting down school and work for most people. Fast forward to fall, and everyone has a new normal. On July 15, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey, among other governors, issued a statewide ordinance that required everyone to wear a mask. This ordinance was set to expire on July 31 for Alabamians, but it has since then been extended throughout October. There were many questions concerning college students, faculty and staff with the Fall semester coming as quickly as it did. Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) is one of many colleges and universities that decided to resume on campus. The University has made numerous accommodations and changes to better benefit the students and staff. Exactly what has AUM c...

AUM Introduces App to Help with Social Distancing in Café

BY: Kameron Berry Students, are you worried about ordering your food and staying socially distant? Never fear, the GET app is here! Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) has introduced the GET app to help with food orders while maintaining social distancing protocols. Students can order their meals through the app, and once the order is complete they receive a set time for when their food is ready for pick up. I spoke with Dining Coordinator Ashley Thorne about the GET app today. When asked about how the app has helped to feed students, Thorne responded, “ Last year when lunch time came, everyone would rush in and swarm the cafeteria, and we were trying to figure out the best way to avoid that especially now with coronavirus and social distancing going on.” Thorne went on to...

The New Normal: Masks, Everything You Need to Know

BY: Jessica Alldredge It’s the new normal, masks are everywhere. This is for our protection when we can’t keep six feet of distance between ourselves and other people. With all the different types of masks that have become available, how do you choose and what will protect you the most? The CDC guidelines state that masks should have two or more layers. Including a filter is also advised but not as necessary as the mask itself. The material should be breathable and fit snug against your face with no gaps. Masks also shouldn’t be vinyl or plastic or include any kind of valves or vents.  So with all this information readily available, let’s figure out what works and what doesn’t. Positive Things That Can Be Taken From Quarantine

BY: Justin Hicks Life before the coronavirus seems to be so far away. COVID-19 has caused society to change in so many ways. We all have been forced into quarantine, and that may seem very negative. What if I told you there are positives that will come from this pandemic? These positives will change the way that we live. Though it is hard to see, there are some benefits from this pandemic that we all will experience.  1. Time  Throughout life we all have made the excuse, “I do not have time.” Through this pandemic, we have gained an excess amount of time that we did not possess in normal everyday life. During quarantine, we are forced to stay home, which could be seen as a negative. However, more time at home allows us to spend needed time with loved ones. Also, th...

Things To Watch On Netflix During Quarantine That Will Make You Laugh

BY: Justin Hicks During these dark times, we all need something light-hearted to brighten up our day.  Since we have to stay inside, the activities we can do are limited. As a result, streaming sites like Netflix have become more and more popular. I have come up with a list of three shows that are entertaining and will generate a laugh during these hard times. Tiger King Tiger King is a docu-series released on March 20, 2020 that focuses on Joe Exotic. Exotic is a collector of big cats that he keeps in his zoo in Wynnewood, Oklahoma. The series looks at all aspects of his life from his cats to his arrest. You are immersed into a train wreck that you just cannot look away from. If you feel that you are not normal, watch this show and you will feel perfectly normal compare...

To the Graduating Seniors of 2020

BY: Caitlin Gallagher My first semester here at AUM was Spring 2012. I bought a new backpack, all new supplies, and a laptop. I was so excited to do this—get my degree and get a kickass job afterward. Seven and a half years later, and I’m finally getting my degree, but it’s not how I pictured it.  The worldwide pandemic of COVID 19 has left some of us, especially graduating seniors, feeling a little low. Athletes didn’t know their last game would be their last game. Panhellenic members didn’t know their last social would be their last social. I didn’t know that what I’ve worked towards for seven and a half years would be pushed back for another three months. I know-- I’ll still get my degree at the end of the semester but it sure doesn’t feel that way. COVID 19 has left the wor...

AUM Softball Could Benefit from Stoppage in Play

BY: Jason Martin With so many sports programs across the country being affected by the CoViD-19 virus, there can be positives taken from the nationwide sports hiatus that was put into effect by the NCAA and the Gulf South Conference. One benefit to the stoppage in play could lay with the AUM softball team. The Warhawks were tabbed to be one of the top teams in the country after being picked third in the Gulf South Conference preseason polls, and that is where they currently stand at the break. After winning seven games in a row, the Orange & Black brought their record to 17-5 on the year with an 8-4 record in conference action. The Warhawks were about to enter a critical GSC series at the AUM Softball Complex against No. 25 Alabama Huntsville, but the season was put on hold the day...

NCAA Makes Right Move with Eligibility Announcement

BY: Jason Martin In the middle of all the uncertainty around college athletics as a result of the COVID-19 virus, the NCAA made the right move and shut down sports for the foreseeable future. One thing that had sports fans and student athletes concerned was the question surrounding students’ eligibility. There is a lot that goes into giving a student-athlete their eligibility back. Scholarships, incoming freshmen, and promised playing time makes for an interesting and difficult decision on how to continue with this decision. Winter sport athletes like basketball may have a more difficult time arguing an extra year of eligibility because their season was either over or ending within the next few weeks if the virus had not shut everything down. Spring sports, however, had major conce...

COVID-19 Has Become a Pandemic

BY: Shuntia Gowdy To panic or not to panic? The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) (SARS-CoV-2) has quickly became a pandemic, and many people across the world are starting to take precautions. COVID-19 was first discovered in China, and has since been detected in many other places across the world, including the United States. It is a part of a variation of viruses that is seen in humans and other animal species. The animal coronavirus rarely has an affect on humans. The virus spreads person-to-person.  Illness symptoms have been reported to range from mild to severe, including fatalities. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, older people and people of all ages with severe underlying health conditions like heart disease, lung disease, and diabetes seem ...
