One of the most controversial topics in the country is the LGBTQ community. Some support it and others object. Coming to terms with one’s sexual identity takes a toll on an individual’s mind. When young adults enter college, it can be difficult to find a sense of belonging and acceptance. Four in ten teens to young adults identify their living community to be unaccepting of the LGBTQ community. Feeling unaccepted in an area of residence can lead to a feeling of unacceptance on a college campus. It can lead students to easily feel lost.
Research concludes that young adults and teenagers who identify as part of the LGBTQ community are more likely to struggle with their mental health. Students in this community commonly suffer from anxiety and depression. This pushes them further away from interacting with other students around campus. Spectrum (formerly known as AUM Gay Straight Alliance) is an LGBTQ group/organization on the AUM campus that is trying to help with these issues.
Gathering on Wednesday evenings at 6:20pm in Clement Hall 204, Spectrum brings in people of all sexual orientation. Trying to spread awareness and advocate for fair and equal treatment, they set up events and activities to show that their voices will be heard.
On October 22, Spectrum will be celebrating Coming Out Day on campus. In front of Goodwyn Hall from 12pm-3pm, Spectrum will hold a bake sale open to all students. There is no way to take credit cards so students will need to bring cash. Along with the bake sale, there will be a large canvas/poster for students to place their painted hands. These handprints represent the support for those who have come out and those who are still questioning their identity. You can paint your hand to reflect the pride flag, the flag of your sexual orientation, or any color you prefer.
Spectrum is a safe place where individuals can gather and be exactly who they are. There is always business in every club or organization but Spectrum is different. This particular organization allows you to interact with other students that feel exactly like you. Spectrum accepts students that do not attend AUM. They can attend another school around the city but are welcome to join. It offers a forming of friendship and a community at AUM that you will not find anywhere else. If you are looking for a sense of belonging, acceptance, or just a place to feel free, Spectrum welcomes all.
