Shriek Week Flashback

It’s spooky season! Shriek Week is an AUM tradition as old as time. Each October, the Campus Activities Board hosts a week of events for a spook-tastic Shriek Week. As Shriek Week approaches, I’m excited to see what’s in store and how far it’s come since 2015. It’s time for a blast from the past.

Shriek Week is an unforgettable experience! Students and faculty/staff are all welcome to enjoy the festivities of the week. The whole campus gets involved in one way or another. Since 2015, there have been different activities that range from terrifying to non-scary.

The library started out by picking a Halloween theme and decorating the building. They had Trick or Treat tables where students could pick up snacks or popcorn. If students were more daring, they could even go inside the library’s version of a haunted house. The Campus Activities Board would arrange to have master hypnotists like Thomas Bresadola, magic shows like Josh McVar, movies on the Quad like The First Purge and the Ring, annual haunted houses, and the annual costume party. The students from the Honors Program hosted a thrilling Masquerade Ball where students could get all dressed up. The Wellness Center likes to kick it into high gear with Triple Treat, a high energy dance party.  One of the most popular activities has been the Six Flags Fright Fest hosted by International Student Involvement. Students bought ticket and took a road trip to Six Flags located in Georgia. The Housing & Residence Life participated in Halloween-themed community services like volunteering for ZooBoo.

I have had my share of fun activities when it comes to Shriek Week. In 2017 and 2018, I participated in the annual Haunted House. The experience was thrilling, and it was so much fun to scare my friends. At the time, they had no clue that I was a part of the haunted house, so when I was running after them and calling their names they didn’t know what to do. I helped the cast and crew set up the maze for the performance. Also, we painted some of the actors’ faces to make them really frightening. It’s fun to attend events, but it’s even more fun to be involved!

Shriek Week is definitely not an event to miss. Make sure you attend as many events as you can this year so that you can get the full experience.
