March is Women’s History Month and the Political Film Series is presenting both the trials and the accomplishments of women with a showing of the 2015 film Suffragette, introduced by Dr. Elizabeth Woodworth.
This historical drama recreates the feminist movement in 1912 London, England. Despite not receiving the right to vote until 1928, the film depicts the leaders of the movement such as Maud Watts (Carey Mulligan) as they struggle with poor work conditions, low pay and sexual harassment.
According to the New York Times, “It shows the limits of solidarity even when the sympathetic ties of family or class are involved. It also underlines the viciousness with which power reacts when it is challenged.”
The showing will be March 8 at 7 p.m. in Goodwyn Hall 109. The event is free and open to the public; light refreshments of popcorn and soda will be available.
