Do Pets Improve the Quality of Life?

BY: Kaleria Jackson My dog has brought me unexplained happiness since she came into my life. I have a four-year-old Maltese named Keke. My dog is literally my life. The older she gets, the more I have acknowledged that she has an attachment to me and my family members. I think she notices that I have formed an attachment to her as well. Regardless of my relationship with my dog, she has improved the quality of my life. I believe that pets can improve the quality of your life. There are a few ways that pets can improve the quality of a person’s life. Reduce Stress Studies have shown that being in the vicinity of or having interactions with a pets can reduce stress. An Unlikely Friendship: How a Conservative and Liberal Became the Best of Friends

BY: Chelsea Bassett Currently, this nation seems to be more divided than it has ever been. Specifically, the 2016 Presidential election has left this country in a state of constant disagreement between extremists on both sides of the political spectrum. Unfortunately, with the recent midterms, the country hasn’t had much time to recover from the political mess that both the radical “lefties and righties” have left for us to clean up. In a country that has a people so hell-bent on tearing each other a part, it’s hard to find a place to evade the political backlash we see and hear on the news and social media; that’s one thing that me and now one of my best friends, Tommi Jo, could agree on. Tommi Jo is also a student at AUM, and like me, she is also a Communications major here...

The Canceled Culture: No One and Nothing is Safe from Being Cancelled

BY: Savanna Sabb It seems like almost every week or every other week on social media a scandal arises and shortly after that scandal, someone or something is allegedly “cancelled.” Welcome to the cancelled culture where people who utter an offensive word or post a tweet that is an unpopular opinion are quickly cancelled according to the many users of social media. What qualifies someone to enter the world of cancellation you might ask? With the help of some examples, let’s take a look. Some celebrities have been cancelled for their unpopular opinions that seem to offend a majority of the demographic that they appeal to. Kanye West was recently declared as cancelled after he stated in an interview that he believed slavery was a choice. People who once supported him wasted no time ...

An Experience to Remember

BY: Kaleria Jackson I went to my first college football game this year. I went to the Alabama homecoming game against Missouri. I had no idea what to expect when I arrived on Alabama’s campus. I live next to Auburn so I knew traffic was going to be a problem but, as for the experience I didn’t have a clue. My older cousin invited me to go with her to the Alabama homecoming game since she was an alumnus of the University of Alabama. The first thing we did when arrived on the campus was get ready to go tailgating. I have never been to a tailgate as large as that one. There were tents and music playing everywhere, children in their Alabama gear running around and throwing little footballs to one another. There were televisions set up under every other tent. We didn’t stay at the tailgate fo...

Comparing Brands: Netflix vs Hulu

BY: Kaleria Jackson Every college student either has an account or is using someone’s account. Netflix is a veteran. Hulu is a rookie. The battle between which streaming services are the best has been up for debate. Understanding which one is the best service is the hardest part. Netflix started its streaming services in 1997, which is a total shock due to it becoming popular in the 2010s. Netflix first started out as a DVD-by-mail service with no late fees. As time went on Netflix turned completely digital streaming service. Hulu started its streaming services in 2008. Hulu’s streaming service was dedicated more towards network television rather than movies. Each service has particular things about them that not too many people care for. When watching Netflix, you have to wait un...

Have Curse Words Lost Their Curse?

BY: Savanna Sabb Do you remember when you were younger, there was always that list of words you could never say? Usually they were the infamous “4 letter words” that were censored throughout every form of media. As I’ve been paying more attention to what is said in the media and reality, I’ve noticed that those words that we should never utter in the presence of anyone but our diaries are now being said with such ease. Recently, I saw an Instagram video of a little girl repeatedly dropping the F-bomb while her mom was recording her. I don’t know about you, but if I even said the word “what” to my parents I’d be in serious trouble. I can’t even imagine saying the F word in front of them which the girl in the video said hundreds of times without even the least bit of fear of being rep...

A Look at the #MeToo Movement: One Year Later

While the inception of the movement was a year ago, its effects are still being felt. Venom: Expectation vs Reality

BY: Kodi Robertson Sony continues to hold a firm grip on the Spiderman franchise. Rumored to not have the Amazing Web-head featured in this movie Venom aims to prove that the titular character Venom can stand alone without Spidey. When the first trailer dropped, all eyes were set on their own computer screens waiting to see Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock morph into Venom. Fans were left waiting, wanting, and desiring to see how much more improvement was made since Spiderman 3. Make no mistake, Topher Grace did a brilliant job with the script provided and given circumstances of the film. Eddie Brock needs a bigger body to embody the essence of Venom. With any comic book movie comes the risk of always disappointing hardcore comic book fans, but how much disappointment is reasonable and unreasona...
