Veterans Week

Campus, News, University

If you happen to be on campus and notice many American flags on the Quad understand that they aren’t there just as a show of patriotism. Twenty American flags will be placed on campus in November as a symbol for the 20 veterans who commit suicide every day. Nov. 11 is Veterans Day, and AUM is going to honor the many we have on campus. The Student Veterans Association will be having a “Veterans Week,” which will kick off with an “AUM Supports our Veterans Day” on Nov. 9 and 10. (more…)

White Cane Day

Campus, News, University

One of the earliest lessons we learn in life is “The Golden Rule”. Treat others the way you want to be treated. As a child, this lesson is simple. As an adult, while the concept is the same, it tends to be harder to execute. At times we’re not sure how people want to be treated. People who are different tend to make us uncomfortable, therefore we shy away from them. Why is that? (more…)

We're hoping you'll know somebody who might want to submit an essay in The Nation's Student Writing Contest. Battle of the Bands

Campus, News

Lip syncing has become an enormously popular form of entertainment over the past decade. Television shows such as “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and “Saturday Night Live” are known to include hilarious lip-syncing skits. There is even a show dedicated solely to lip syncing, appropriately called “Lip Sync Battle,” where celebrities lip sing and dance to well-known songs. Many high schools and colleges have put together lip sync events, including Prattville High School and Huntingdon College. Now, AUM is on the map too! (more…)

Get Your Family Involved with AUM Family Connection

Campus, News, University

For many students here at AUM, family is perhaps the most important part of their lives. In some cases, students have had to move far away from their families and may feel disconnected. If you fall into the category, the AUM Family Connection is here to save the day. Operating in the Office of Orientation and Transitions, the Family Connection seeks to keep families connected and inform family members of what is happening on campus. The main message of Family Connection to AUM families is that they play a vital role in their student’s college career. (more…)

Being Privileged: Is it a Terrible Thing?

Campus, News, Opinion, University

With all that occurs in a student’s life, it is understandable that some components of campus life may be missed. Once a month, in the Landing at the Nest, students and faculty meet and openly and safely discuss topics affecting them today. With signs placed all across campus, the blunt, yet caring, nature of Hot Topics Café always keeps me coming back for more. On Feb. 10, students and faculty joined together to “check [their] privilege.” (more…)

Another Important Vote to Cast

Campus, News, University

As the 2016 presidential elections take place this year, many AUM students will be flexing their constitutional rights and vote for the first time. The debates, platforms and controversy surrounding the presidential candidates generate a lot of buzz and excitement and the election is the topic of conversations across campus. However, voting for the nation’s next president is not the only important vote students can cast this year. AUM holds elections each spring semester for the Student Government Association on campus. This year, the SGA elections take place on March 28 through the 31. All students are welcome to vote…

Christmas lights are being hung, cookies are being baked, and of course trees are going up in nearly every household across the nation. AUM did its part in ringing in the holiday spirit. AUM Baseball and Softball Make Huge Splashes Under First-year Head Coaches

Campus, News, Sports, University

Two teams, two ideally similar situations and two fantastic seasons under their belt. For the AUM baseball and softball teams, 2015 marked the beginning of a new era. For the first time in either program’s history, they began their 2015 campaign without the head coaches that helped start up their respected sport. The softball team parted ways with head coach Chris Steiner-Wilcoxson in the fall of 2014, after six successful seasons. Steiner-Wilcoxson got the program off of the ground and running during her short tenure at AUM, posting a record of 189-85-2 in the team’s first six years of existence.…

Club Spotlight: Study Abroad

Campus, News, University

Traveling to another county is usually one of the top goals on many people’s bucket lists. However, the high cost of airfare is a major obstacle, especially for college students who still struggle to balance classes and jobs while aiming towards a degree. Now there is a new student organization on campus that aims to help cut down the costs for student explorers. It is called the Study Abroad Club. The club was started in fall of 2014 after a student’s suggestion to make a club to help raise funds towards study abroad trips. Since then, the group has been…

Coached by Michelle Crompton, their leader is wanting to expand and make the program bigger. On March 7, the squad members will be heading over to the Cramton Bowl Complex in Montgomery to show a routine they have been preparing. Cheerleading squads from across the Southern States Athletic Conference will come and show their skills on this day. This is formally called the SSAC Cheerleading Exhibition. This is the first time the AUM Cheerleaders…
