Buying Christmas Presents on a Budget

BY: Allison Stewart

As “Jingle Bells” begins playing on the radio, Christmas shopping begins. The list of people you need to buy presents for usually grows quicker than expected. You may think your wallet will slowly lose it’s jingle — it does not have to, though.

No matter how long your list may be, there are ways to ensure you get the perfect presents without breaking the bank. It all begins with comparing your options.

It also helps to group people who are associated with you in similar ways. You can organize it by how much you are willing to spend for these groups. You can also find ways to stretch one transaction. For example, if you want to buy a small present for neighbors and co-workers, you can find places that sell items in packs, such as lotions or bath bombs. This allows you to make one purchase and distribute it.

With these small tips in mind, apply the following steps to stay organized and save money this holiday season.

  • Write down a list and create groups.

As discussed before, taking the time to write down your list will help you evaluate what you actually need to buy. If you organize people into groups based off what you are willing to spend, it will guide you where to go. Going shopping without a list might lead you to a more scattered mindset. You may end up forgetting items or purchasing unnecessary things.

  • Search for sales and coupons.

Once you are ready to start shopping, look up any sales stores may offer. Also, do not be afraid to call your favorite stores and ask for upcoming specials. This will help you plan ahead.

Simply going to Eastdale Mall’s website allows you to look at their weekly or daily sales. Before you go out and shop, be sure to scan through any opportunities you might otherwise miss out on. It is also a great idea to follow your favorite stores on social media pages to stay updated on their latest offers.

  • Pictures go a long way.

Framing a favorite photo is the perfect way to bring a smile, especially for grandparents or significant others. It is a simple, yet personal gift. Printing a photo usually costs less than $5, depending on what size you choose. When it comes to frames, Walmart and Target have a wide selection. If you are really pinching pennies, Dollar Tree has options, too.

  • Look into homemade presents.

Not everyone is crafty, but for those of you who are, making your own presents can often save quite a bit. Utilizing fun apps such as Pinterest can give endless options to things you can do.

One simple idea is to buy a pack of canvases and paint simple designs, initials, or quotes. Shopping around and looking at the trendy decorations will help inspire your own crafts. Next thing you know, the items you usually buy at your favorite stores will be in your own home.

  • Compare online versus in-store items.

As technology grows, so does online shopping. This opens the door for endless choices. If it is too overwhelming for you to strictly shop online, you can still visit your stores. However, it is useful to compare prices of items you know you will purchase. Finding them at places like Amazon, eBay, Etsy, and Wish may present cheaper prices. You will never know unless you check. Also, it can save you some time from roaming every store in town.

At the end of the day, Christmas shopping can be a fun adventure. Get together with your friends or family to create your own holiday lists. Talking with another person can give you new ideas for present options and creative ways to save.
