BET Plus

Have Netflix and Hulu started a trend? With millions of people subscribing to these streaming services and getting rid of their cable television providers, many network television stations have started their own streaming services. Like other television networks, BET (Black Entertainment Television) cable television network has started their own streaming service.

Tyler Perry partnered with BET to launch a streaming service that will cater to African American viewers and content creators. The video-on-demand service will have an ad-free subscription. Lucky enough for viewers, there will be no commercial breaks. For only $9.99 a month, this service will provide viewers with the chance to watch different shows, movies, stand-up specials, and content from Tyler Perry himself. BET Plus will now be the home of Tyler Perry’s television shows, stage plays, and films. Not only will the streaming service have content from BET, but it’ll also have content from other Viacom networks, such as VH1. The service will focus on original and new content from a variety of filmmakers and content creators, like Will Packer and Tracy Oliver. BET Plus will stream content that has not been made available online before.

BET Networks President Scott Mills said, “We are thrilled to offer a streaming experience of content curated for the underserved African American audience with BET [Plus], African Americans have a higher SVOD (subscription video on demand) adoption rate than any other consumer base on the market, which is why BET [Plus] is a natural complement of BET’s linear network, which has been and continues to be the leading home of black culture for decades.”

BET launched its streaming services on September 19th. After the service launched, people took to the internet to give it some reviews. Not all of the reviews were positive— most of them were negative. Some people have complained that the streaming service is $9.99 but still has the same options as the regular network service. Others have complained about the limited movies that are available on the new service. The promised movies and shows that were supposedly going to be on the new service have not been placed on the application. This alone has caused an outrage with some  paying viewers.

Have you tried BET Plus? What do you think about this new streaming service? Will you give this new service a try?
