AUM students facing advising changes

By: Hayley Richards

MONTGOMERY, Ala – Auburn University Montgomery students have recently experienced changes within the advising process. Until recently, students were advised by a professor in their designated program. As of Spring 2023, students are now being advised by advising and recruiting coordinators. According to AUM students, there are pros and cons to the newly established way of advising.

Academic advisors are tasked with assisting students with course scheduling for current or future semesters, in which schedules will vary based on a student’s degree program of choice and curriculum guidelines that are set in place. However, balancing out a student’s coursework, extracurricular activities and job is a factor that impacts their overall academic success and sets the tone for how they will progress forward in their academic career.

Students are required to meet with their advisors to receive their pin numbers that access the portal for upcoming class registration. This is an incentive for students to sit down with their advisors for a complete walk-through of their future schedules. Students feel that the new advising process is not much different than before, but the sense of personal connection is lost. Oftentimes, students were previously meeting with professors they have taken courses with. This established relationship provided a sense of comfort and trust for students. Advising can be a scary and stressful time for students, especially those who are nearing graduation. AUM graduate Stephie Williams states, “I can not stress enough how important advising is for students. Keep in contact with your advisor, and if you have questions do not hesitate to ask. They are there to help you. I had two friends who did not keep up with their DegreeWorks and ended up being short a few credits before graduation. Sometimes, students discover this too late and it puts a hold on graduating.”

Students are encouraged to book their advising appointments in advance. Waiting until the last minute to register for classes is inconvenient for both students and professors. The longer students wait to register for classes, the fewer spots remain. Spots are limited within classes, and missing the cut to register can make or break a student’s graduation status.
