Positive Things That Can Be Taken From Quarantine

BY: Justin Hicks Life before the coronavirus seems to be so far away. COVID-19 has caused society to change in so many ways. We all have been forced into quarantine, and that may seem very negative. What if I told you there are positives that will come from this pandemic? These positives will change the way that we live. Though it is hard to see, there are some benefits from this pandemic that we all will experience.  1. Time  Throughout life we all have made the excuse, “I do not have time.” Through this pandemic, we have gained an excess amount of time that we did not possess in normal everyday life. During quarantine, we are forced to stay home, which could be seen as a negative. However, more time at home allows us to spend needed time with loved ones. Also, th...

Things To Watch On Netflix During Quarantine That Will Make You Laugh

BY: Justin Hicks During these dark times, we all need something light-hearted to brighten up our day.  Since we have to stay inside, the activities we can do are limited. As a result, streaming sites like Netflix have become more and more popular. I have come up with a list of three shows that are entertaining and will generate a laugh during these hard times. Tiger King Tiger King is a docu-series released on March 20, 2020 that focuses on Joe Exotic. Exotic is a collector of big cats that he keeps in his zoo in Wynnewood, Oklahoma. The series looks at all aspects of his life from his cats to his arrest. You are immersed into a train wreck that you just cannot look away from. If you feel that you are not normal, watch this show and you will feel perfectly normal compare...

To the Graduating Seniors of 2020

BY: Caitlin Gallagher My first semester here at AUM was Spring 2012. I bought a new backpack, all new supplies, and a laptop. I was so excited to do this—get my degree and get a kickass job afterward. Seven and a half years later, and I’m finally getting my degree, but it’s not how I pictured it.  The worldwide pandemic of COVID 19 has left some of us, especially graduating seniors, feeling a little low. Athletes didn’t know their last game would be their last game. Panhellenic members didn’t know their last social would be their last social. I didn’t know that what I’ve worked towards for seven and a half years would be pushed back for another three months. I know-- I’ll still get my degree at the end of the semester but it sure doesn’t feel that way. COVID 19 has left the wor...

Disney Pixar Changing the Family Dynamic of Their Films

BY: Caitlin Gallagher This article contains spoilers for the movie Onward. Disney Pixar rushed the release of Onward to Disney+ due to the worldwide CoVid-19 pandemic, and I’ve watched it several times already. I was so impressed. I have cried, I have laughed, and I have related to it. It really is a heart-warming movie about love, magic, wonder, redemption, trust, family, faith, and sacrifice.  What really caught my attention, though, was how Pixar shows the different family dynamics, challenges, and ailments that are relatable to kids and adults today. This film is filled with hard-hitting personal challenges that could prepare children for real issues raised in society.  The story is centered around a young boy, Ian, and his older brother, Barley. Ian was not even born...

Is Daylight Savings Time Here to Stay?

BY: Evan Justice The beginning of Daylight Savings Time (DST) has always been a very difficult transition for many Americans. Not only do you have to set your clocks ahead one hour, but you also must deal with losing an hour of sleep, as well as all the possible inconveniences of the sun coming up later in the day. According to recent studies, DST not only negatively affects your mental health, but can also increase the risk of heart attack or stroke within the first three weeks after beginning. On the other hand, the extra hour of sleep we get at the end of DST has been linked to fewer heart attacks. Studies have also shown that car accidents, workplace injuries, and depression can significantly increase due to DST.  Many states are attempting to end DST for good. However...

AUM Professor Spotlight

BY: Justin Hicks AUM is blessed to have such a great team of professors that enhance the learning experience for all students who step into their classrooms. Dr. Hilary Gamble and Dr. Eunyoung Kim are professors in the Communication and Theatre Department of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. These professors show a dedication to not only their students but also to research outside the classroom. Let's get to know them a little more. Dr. Hilary Gamble  Dr. Hilary Gamble received her undergraduate degree in communications with a plan to move to a Top 10 news market to get a job behind the scenes as a director She decided that life wasn't for her and after some consideration decided to go back to school. Dr. Gamble’s primary question during her master's educatio...

AUM Softball Could Benefit from Stoppage in Play

BY: Jason Martin With so many sports programs across the country being affected by the CoViD-19 virus, there can be positives taken from the nationwide sports hiatus that was put into effect by the NCAA and the Gulf South Conference. One benefit to the stoppage in play could lay with the AUM softball team. The Warhawks were tabbed to be one of the top teams in the country after being picked third in the Gulf South Conference preseason polls, and that is where they currently stand at the break. After winning seven games in a row, the Orange & Black brought their record to 17-5 on the year with an 8-4 record in conference action. The Warhawks were about to enter a critical GSC series at the AUM Softball Complex against No. 25 Alabama Huntsville, but the season was put on hold the day...

NCAA Makes Right Move with Eligibility Announcement

BY: Jason Martin In the middle of all the uncertainty around college athletics as a result of the COVID-19 virus, the NCAA made the right move and shut down sports for the foreseeable future. One thing that had sports fans and student athletes concerned was the question surrounding students’ eligibility. There is a lot that goes into giving a student-athlete their eligibility back. Scholarships, incoming freshmen, and promised playing time makes for an interesting and difficult decision on how to continue with this decision. Winter sport athletes like basketball may have a more difficult time arguing an extra year of eligibility because their season was either over or ending within the next few weeks if the virus had not shut everything down. Spring sports, however, had major conce...

AUM Men’s Basketball Takes Vital Step in Quest for Relevance

BY: Jason Martin Alabama, Alabama State, Auburn, Faulkner, Huntington, and AUM are all fighting for relevance in central Alabama, and the AUM men’s basketball team took a big step in the fight after a stellar 2019-20 season. The Warhawks finished the season with a winning record at 15-14 and competed in the program’s first-ever Gulf South Conference Championship.  AUM struggled to begin their season, dropping three of their first five games to Rollins, Miles, and Embry-Riddle. The season, however, saw many accomplishments as early as their 115-80 loss to Embry-Riddle— senior guard Darrion Taylor became the 19th player in program history to record 1,000 career points. The initial glimpse of greatness from the 2019-20 squad came in the conference opener at the AUM Gymnasium on N...

AUM Women’s Basketball Sees Growth in Opening Season

BY: Jason Martin In their first season as full members of NCAA DII’s Gulf South Conference, Auburn University at Montgomery’s women’s basketball team showed a great deal of promise during the 2019-20 season. The Warhawks finished the season with a 12-16 record and went 5-15 in conference play. Led by senior forward Victoria Morales, AUM improved upon their 5-23 record from the 2018-19 campaign.  AUM started the season strong by going 4-1 against regional non-conference opponents. However, the Warhawks did see a swift decline in performance when conference play opened in late November. There were, however, some positive signs in the latter stages of 2019, as the Warhawks were able to gain two victories over Trevecca Nazarene University and Fort Valley State before resuming GSC actio...
