An Experience to Remember

BY: Kaleria Jackson I went to my first college football game this year. I went to the Alabama homecoming game against Missouri. I had no idea what to expect when I arrived on Alabama’s campus. I live next to Auburn so I knew traffic was going to be a problem but, as for the experience I didn’t have a clue. My older cousin invited me to go with her to the Alabama homecoming game since she was an alumnus of the University of Alabama. The first thing we did when arrived on the campus was get ready to go tailgating. I have never been to a tailgate as large as that one. There were tents and music playing everywhere, children in their Alabama gear running around and throwing little footballs to one another. There were televisions set up under every other tent. We didn’t stay at the tailgate fo...

Comparing Brands: Netflix vs Hulu

BY: Kaleria Jackson Every college student either has an account or is using someone’s account. Netflix is a veteran. Hulu is a rookie. The battle between which streaming services are the best has been up for debate. Understanding which one is the best service is the hardest part. Netflix started its streaming services in 1997, which is a total shock due to it becoming popular in the 2010s. Netflix first started out as a DVD-by-mail service with no late fees. As time went on Netflix turned completely digital streaming service. Hulu started its streaming services in 2008. Hulu’s streaming service was dedicated more towards network television rather than movies. Each service has particular things about them that not too many people care for. When watching Netflix, you have to wait un...

Graduating Soon? Here’s How To Keep Up With Your Credits

BY: Tommi Jo Miller For those expecting to graduate this December or upcoming May, the end is in sight. The only thing that could end this bliss for a student is learning that they do not have enough credits to finish as soon as planned. To avoid this last minute debacle, it is a good idea to keep up with credits semester to semester. There are two ways to do this—by consulting Blackboard or an advisor. The “Degree Works” feature on Blackboard is an easy way for a student to track their progress using a detailed breakdown of their academic success and progress. At the top of the screen, students can find their student number (S number), overall GPA, academic standing, major and minor, college, degree (BA or BS), concentration, and classification (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, or Seni...

AUM Shriek Week

BY Ashleigh Hicks MONTGOMERY, ALA (6 Nov., 2018)— Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) holds the annual Shriek Week event: a campus tradition, allowing students to celebrate Halloween while never being too old. Warhawks really got into the spirit this week decking out campus with festive decorations. The AUM library’s decorative theme this year was Halloween town. Staff and students worked hard to make this an unforgettable year. Warhawks dressed in all kinds of crazy ghouly costumes. Some students dressed as Penny Wise from the horror film “It”, a Chicago fan and Cleopatra. Traditionally, this week of frightful fun includes events such as costume parties, haunted houses and creepy crafting. Campus Activities Board (CAB) Director Selena Johnson said that AUM, “… is the unofficial spons...

AUM’s New Group Fitness Class

BY: Brittany Vallely AUM’s Physical Education Program offers a new group fitness class for participants with intellectual disabilities. The class takes place at the AUM wellness center and begins with an obstacle course, followed by a variety of different activities with an emphasis of having fun. The class is a full body work out that focuses on cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, endurance, balance, and coordination. Dr. Erin Reilly, a professor at AUM, helped develop the class with physical therapist Tiffany Higginbotham, and focused on activities that will help with reflex integration. “There is not a class like this one anywhere in the state of Alabama,” said Reilly. There are currently eight regular participants, seven of whom have Down syndrome, and range in age from 26...

Have Curse Words Lost Their Curse?

BY: Savanna Sabb Do you remember when you were younger, there was always that list of words you could never say? Usually they were the infamous “4 letter words” that were censored throughout every form of media. As I’ve been paying more attention to what is said in the media and reality, I’ve noticed that those words that we should never utter in the presence of anyone but our diaries are now being said with such ease. Recently, I saw an Instagram video of a little girl repeatedly dropping the F-bomb while her mom was recording her. I don’t know about you, but if I even said the word “what” to my parents I’d be in serious trouble. I can’t even imagine saying the F word in front of them which the girl in the video said hundreds of times without even the least bit of fear of being rep...

Tips to Winning the Fight Between You and Procrastination

BY: Savanna Sabb Procrastination has been my greatest enemy during my college career. It has been so easy for me to immediately ditch writing a paper to go eat with my friends. I always end up telling myself the age-old lie: “I deserve this break and I’ll work on it right when I get home” then when I get home what am I doing? Binge watching a show on Netflix. Procrastination is like that devil that is on the shoulder of cartoon characters that always tries to sweet talk them into making the wrong choices. I have found a few tips that can make that devil disappear into a pure oblivion. Tip 1: Understand the connection between impulsivity and procrastination. Lifehacker.com has an article that explains how procrastination is a product of being impulsive. You know when you’re studyi...
