If you happen to be on campus and notice many American flags on the Quad understand that they aren’t there just as a show of patriotism. Twenty American flags will be placed on campus in November as a symbol for the 20 veterans who commit suicide every day. Nov. 11 is Veterans Day, and AUM is going to honor the many we have on campus. The Student Veterans Association will be having a “Veterans Week,” which will kick off with an “AUM Supports our Veterans Day” on Nov. 9 and 10.
On these days , students can sign thank-you cards in front of Goodwyn Hall for the many veterans on campus. Each card will then be displayed on the first floor of the Taylor Center in the Veterans Resource Center, room 122, for the remainder of the semester.
SVA will also host the “AUM Day of Giving” to raise money for veteran programs on campus, but also to show AUM’s appreciation for our veteran students. Wendy Taylor is the SVA adviser on campus, and she expressed her excitement for the Day of Giving and Veterans Week as a whole. “This is our chance to go above and beyond to help those who have fought to secure our freedom in this country,” she says. AUM is looking to increase the student veteran population on campus. Events like these provide the opportunity to showcase AUM’s educational and transitional support services. Veterans can also see that AUM is dedicated to raising funds to help them personally succeed as well. The AUM Day of Giving supports a great cause as well as our students and fellow classmates, so make sure to stop by and give your donation.
All campus clubs, organizations, offices and departments are invited to get involved with Veterans Week. The SVA will be running a banner competition during the month of November.
While there will never be enough words to express the gratitude AUM has for those who have served our country, Veterans Week will showcase the campus-wide appreciation.
