Top 3 Trends That Have Taken Over Social Media

BY: Savanna Sabb

Trends come and go so fast before any of us even have a chance to catch on or determine if we like them or not. As college students, most of us are not as much in the loop because we are too busy trying to keep our GPA on the right track rather than worry about the latest dance challenge that has been swarming the internet. I took the liberty in researching what trends have been popular lately because scrolling through my Instagram feed and not having any idea of what the latest memes mean or why people are randomly doing a certain dance is starting to get old. So without further ado the following is a list of 3 trends that have been popular on social media over the last couple of months.

#inmyfeelingschallenge: This challenge is probably one that you have most likely seen already. People even had their animals doing this challenge. It rose to popularity in June this past summer. Inspired by one of drake’s songs “In My Feelings” the dance became popular when Shiggy, an internet comedian came up with “ The Shiggy” which was a dance that he created that synced up to the lyrics in the song. The dance went viral gaining attention from so many celebrities including Will Smith, Dj Khaled, Ciara, and Ryan Seacrest. People would take the challenge to the next level like dancing alongside a moving car while the song playing. Shiggy was even featured in Drake’s music video doing you guessed it…. “The Shiggy.”

Collin Kaepernick meme: This trend recently started making its rounds around social media. After football player Collin Kaepernick’s Nike ad from the “Just do it” campaign went viral and sparked some mixed reactions. The ad is just a simple black and white photo of Kaepernick with the quote, “Believe in something even if it means sacrificing everything.” Some people did not agree with the decision of making Kaepernick the face of the ad with all of the controversy that has sparked when he decided to boycott standing for the national anthem. Others applauded Nike for the decision. People started recreating their own ads using different celebrities and fictional characters from movies and tv shows.

“24 Hour Overnight Challenge”: This challenge has been popular amongst many YouTubers. This trend involves people hiding in unsuspecting places for 24 hours without getting caught. There are more than a million videos on YouTube of teenagers and young adults staking out in restaurants, stores, cars and even other people’s homes for 24 hours. The videos are actually quite entertaining to watch. Be careful though they are like those videos that you end up watching when you want to take a break from studying and you end up watching 3 when you really just wanted to watch half of one. The goal of the challenge is to sneak into their building of choice before they close and stay in there discretely until the 24 hours are up.
