The voice behind the Montgomery Biscuits

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — For Montgomery Biscuits fans, the food, community and ballpark sounds are all a part of their experience as well as one special voice.

Rick Hendrick has served as the Biscuits’ public address announcer since the team’s origin in 2004, where he has become a staple for fans. In April 2024, Hendrick officially reached the 20-year mark as the voice behind the microphone, which came faster than he expected.

“You blink and 20 years has gone by, “Hendrick said in an interview during last week’s Fan Fest at Riverwalk Stadium. “I didn’t really envision how long it would go. I was just ready to start back then.”

Hendrick’s journey with the Biscuits began with a nerve-wracking interview process, where he read scripts in front of a panel before earning the role. Despite having years of announcing experience, the pressure was real. “It was kind of nerve-wracking,” Hendrick added. “Even though I had been announcing for a long time before then, it was still a little nerve-racking to read in front of other people and be judged on how you read.”

While fans hear the announcer’s voice at the Biscuits game and though they grow to love the atmosphere, many don’t know what it takes to put on a great show.

Hendrick is the program director for Cumulus Media radio stations Y102, WXFX, The Fox and The Vibe, WLWI and Mix 103.3 and has a daily show on The Fox. Just like radio, he explained that preparation ahead of time is key to making each night run smoothly. “We don’t just show up, sit down and start announcing. It takes preparation.”

For this DJ and PA announcer, every game is special because he never knows who will be in the crowd. “It could be a season ticket holder who’s been here for 20 years or it could be someone visiting or attending their first game ever.” “Their impression of the ballpark and what I do matters, so every single night, every read, every player introduction has to be enthusiastic and positive.”

Having that attitude is what makes Rick Hendrick a great addition to the Montgomery Biscuits and it keeps fans returning every season. This is proven by one fan’s comment on a Facebook post celebrating Hendrick’s 20 year anniversary with the Biscuits. “You definitely make the Montgomery Biscuits game day experience better!” said Matthew Kenneth Olson.

This fan’s comment sums it up for most fans of the popular announcer. And because of Hendrick’s consistency, preparation and love for baseball, this has made him a prominent and beloved figure for the Montgomery Biscuits.
