Every school has some form of Student Government Association, but AUM aims to go above and beyond the call of duty to represent the school and improve the quality of life on campus. If making a difference at our university sounds appealing to you, now is your chance to apply. Applications must be placed soon— they are due by Monday, September 30.
The open positions are as follows: Director of Alumni Affairs, Director of Communications and Media Relations, Director of Community Outreach, Director of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs, and Director of Spirit and Traditions. Senator positions are available for the College of Education, the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, the College of Sciences, and a position for a freshman aspiring to get a head start in the SGA. If chosen for a position, the candidate will be sworn in and will serve a one year term.
To get more information and background on the SGA, I interviewed SGA President Ciara Freeman. Ciara joined the SGA in 2016 as a freshman and saw room for improvement, so she started out as a senator and quickly rose through the ranks to her current position. She encourages students to apply and “become a positive voice and take the right steps to get things done… If you want to see change and are willing to go through the process to get things changed, we can provide you with the help and the steps to do that.” She also wants the SGA to have a more positive presence on campus and become more involved with students before her departure in April. She encourages students to attend Senate meetings, which are held on September 30, October 7 and 21, November 4 and 18, December 2, and January 27 in Taylor Center 221 at 3:35 p.m. The SGA will be giving away midterm care packages on October 1 and 2 in the Taylor Center Breezeway from 11a.m. to noon and 2-3 p.m.
If you have any questions about the SGA, email Ciara at sgapresident@aum.edu, and if you want to pop by for a visit or to ask questions in person, the SGA office is located in Warhark Alley on the first floor of the Taylor Center.
