Holiday Travels

BY: Alecia Hicks

Seasons are changing, the leaves are falling, and Thanksgiving and Christmas are right around the corner. Everyone is excited to be finishing up the Fall 2021 semester. For some people, this means traveling to a different state. For others, this might mean hopping on a plane to go back to a completely different country. For some, this means taking a short trip across town to see family. Whatever transportation you have to take, it is always a good idea to take the safest measures possible when traveling during the holidays.

The National Safety Council (NSC) says that traveling by car has “the highest fatality rate of any major form of transportation based on fatalities per passenger mile.” It is also a time where higher alcohol consumption happens due to celebrations surrounding the holidays. These days, we have alternative transportation options such as Uber or Lyft to get you to and from the festivities.

If you are a student staying on campus, here are a few suggestions on how you can keep your belongings safe while away.

  • Make sure your belongings are safely locked away.
  • If you are leaving your car, make sure valuables are taken out of the car and the car is locked.
  • Check and recheck your dorm room to make sure it is locked.
  • Consider purchasing a storage unit if necessary.

Although it seems we have made it through the worst part of COVID-19, we should still be taking precautions when traveling. Although young adults aren’t at high risk for getting COVID-19, they do have a high risk of spreading the virus. This could mean that students attending college have the potential to carry COVID-19 home to parents, grandparents and other family members. Students are encouraged to continue to take safety measures such as washing their hands and wearing their masks.

The holidays are a busy and fun time. Don’t forget to relax and enjoy your time with your family members. We have finally made it through another semester. For some, it hasn’t been easy, and for others, it’s been a breeze, but now is the time to enjoy time with family members and embrace the changing seasons. Happy Holidays!
