Hazing Prevention

BY: Morgan Thayer

This past week marked National Hazing Prevention Week. This week prompts universities across the country to speak up against hazing by hosting different events, tables or workshops. Here on our campus, several of our Greek organizations held guest speakers, interactive tabling and training on how to prevent hazing and why it is important to know the signs of hazing.

AUM has a strict Anti-Hazing Policy, which can be located in the Student Handbook (page 31). Hazing is defined as any action taken or situation created intentionally, whether on or off campus, to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment or ridicule.

Examples of hazing include but are not limited to:

  • Paddling in any form
  • Creation of excess fatigue
  • Scavenger hunts, treasure hunts, quests or road trips
  • Forced usage of alcohol, drug, narcotic, or any other controlled substance
  • Performing tasks or running errands for current members
  • Blindfolding
  • Exposure to the elements

If you have ever been a victim of hazing, report the incident to the Office of Accountability and Advocacy. All reports of violations of AUM’s Anti-Hazing Policy will be promptly investigated by the Office of Accountability & Advocacy. Any individual or organization found to be in violation of this policy will be subject to appropriate disciplinary action as determined by the Office of Accountability and Advocacy.
