Counseling and Health Promotion Services Produces Back to Back Events for Mental Health.

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- College is a stressful time because some students are having to keep track with work, paying their bills, attending extracurricular, exercise, sleep, social life, and on top of that focusing on their school work. All of this can be overwhelming, but counseling services are giving students the opportunity to take a break from the chaos at Cookies and Coffee with Counselors and Mindfulness Group on the same day.

Coffee and Cookies with Counselors is an opportunity for students, faculty and staff members to get to know the counselors and interns.

Individuals can find out about the promotion services and what they offer, along with enjoying free refreshments.

Greta Chambless, Associate Director of Clinical Services, says they are happy to share with students about what counselors do.

“Counseling may seem really scary but it’s not—it can be a wonderful experience,” Chambless said.

Chambless believes the goal of this meet and greet is to take the opportunity to decrease the stigma around mental health and seeking help.

The mindfulness group will occur right after and is split into two halves.

One part of the group is psychoeducation on mindfulness and how it improves wellbeing. The other half of the group is learning mindfulness skills and putting them into practice.

All students are welcomed to come learn tactics such as progress muscle relaxation, breathing exercises, and mindful meditations.

Both events will take place on Wednesday, March 27. Coffee and Cookies will begin at 2 p.m. in the Goodwyn Hall Lobby. Followed by Mindfulness from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Goodwyn Hall 110.

Mindfulness will also be held every Wednesday and will continue to meet until Wednesday, April 24.
