Introducing the “Curtiss Crazies” Student Section

Basketball season is upon us and it’s time for us to get hype! With our transition into Division II we have some very excited students on campus ready to cheer on our team. Preston Collins took his excitement and put a plan into action and with that we have a new student section, “The Curtiss Crazies.” With a relatively young campus he wanted to instill some more tradition on campus in hopes this would inspire others to feel just as passionate. “I just thought the Curtiss Crazies would catapult us into a traditional school when it comes to sports and actually have a student section so people would have a reason to come to the games besides watching our team play,” said Collins. The athletics department has been very excited about this wave of enthusiasm. In the athletics complex whe...

Third Annual “Hoops Madness” to Take Place This Week

AUM will kick off the 2017-2018 basketball season with its annual “Hoops Madness” on Thursday, October 19. This year’s event will consist of a 3-point challenge, a dunking competition, and promotional games. The Athletics Department and the Student Government Association team up each year to rally support for the men’s and women’s basketball teams as they prepare for the upcoming season. “Hoops Madness” is a great way for supporters to honor and celebrate the Warhawks. It’s also a great way for the student athletes to introduce themselves. They tell everyone their names so that when the games come around, you’ll know who to cheer for. When they feel the energy from the crowd, they’ll have the determination and motivation to succeed. The event will also show what the teams can ac...

AUM to Offer New Minor in Nutrition

There is a new minor being offered through the Kinesiology Department in the College of Education. This Sports Nutrition minor is open to all students, but may be especially beneficial to students who are in a health-related major. The minor will be comprised of a sequence of classes that will make a total of 26 credit hours. There are two additional courses for those who are interested in continuing on to pursue a graduate degree in nutrition, such as a Registered Dietitian program. Since this is a new minor, there will be some initial flexibility regarding the sequence of which students are expected to take the courses. This is to give upperclassmen the opportunity to take part in the minor before they are expected to graduate. As the program develops, the order of classes will be enf...

Meet the 2017 AUM Cross Country Team

The Cross Country team consists of members who run long races over varied terrains, including hills, roads, mud puddles, grassy fields, rocky paths, and sometimes even shallow streams. The runner must have a strong heart, put in a lot of practice and have a good pair of racing and training shoes. To complete the race, the runners must not only have the strength to finish, but must also always be aware of their surroundings. Individuals compete against other runners, then the runners scores, based on the individual times to complete the race, are added up for a team score; the lower the score, the better. Q&A with Jessie Rosa, AUM’s First Female Sports Director

Sports are embedded in American Culture. In a historically male dominated industry, women are making incredible strides in having successful careers in the sports industry. One very talented woman on AUM’s campus is Athletic Director, Jessie Rosa. Jessie is AUM’s first female athletic director. Recently, I had the opportunity to talk with Jessie and ask her about her success in athletics. Q: What has attributed to getting you to this position and what has helped with your success in athletics? A: Obviously the willingness for people to give me the opportunity to grow within athletics. I owe a lot of where I am today to my previous boss Steve Krotz who was our athletic director for over a decade and he was also our women’s basketball coach for quite a while. He was the one who gave me...

Burn it to Earn it

Classes, homework, extra-curricular activities and making time for family and friends can keep a student’s schedule pretty full. Making time to exercise may not be a priority during midterms and exams; however, it does serve to benefit the mind and body exponentially and could even boost those test scores. Michigan State University conducted a research that found a connection between exercise and higher GPAs, as reported by Medical Daily. The study even showed that those who had a gym membership were less likely to drop out of college. Joining a gym not only provided students with an opportunity to acquire many mental and physical health benefits, but also gave them a chance to form relationships with others and, in turn, increase their link to the college. Psychology Today re...

AUM Baseball and Softball Make Huge Splashes Under First-year Head Coaches

Two teams, two ideally similar situations and two fantastic seasons under their belt. For the AUM baseball and softball teams, 2015 marked the beginning of a new era. For the first time in either program’s history, they began their 2015 campaign without the head coaches that helped start up their respected sport. The softball team parted ways with head coach Chris Steiner-Wilcoxson in the fall of 2014, after six successful seasons. Steiner-Wilcoxson got the program off of the ground and running during her short tenure at AUM, posting a record of 189-85-2 in the team’s first six years of existence. Her biggest accomplishment undoubtedly was leading the team to its first ever NAIA National Championship in 2014. That team boasted a record of 44-7, while going a perfect 16-0 at home a...
