The Arcade, So Far

The AUM Computer Science Club has officially received $1,000 in funding from SGA to construct and install the retro arcade station in Warhawk Alley. Construction is expected to begin next week. The arcade is expected to be operational by August. The announcement for funding was delayed, for a number of weeks, but initial funds have been granted, and the project is in motion. Currently, the Computer Science Club is getting materials gathered and assigning duties for the construction of the arcade system. (more…)

Experiencing Ben Carson’s Visit to AUM

After waiting in line for thirty minutes to see Dr. Ben Carson speak, I started to wonder if it had been worth leaving class. I volunteered to cover the event because hearing a presidential candidate speak in person was a new experience for me. I have only ever seen these candidates debate on television. Another Important Vote to Cast

As the 2016 presidential elections take place this year, many AUM students will be flexing their constitutional rights and vote for the first time. The debates, platforms and controversy surrounding the presidential candidates generate a lot of buzz and excitement and the election is the topic of conversations across campus. However, voting for the nation’s next president is not the only important vote students can cast this year. AUM holds elections each spring semester for the Student Government Association on campus. This year, the SGA elections take place on March 28 through the 31. All students are welcome to vote for the executive offices; however, college senators are voted on by members from the respective college. (more…)

Going to the Discotech…Silently

Jan. 11 2016 will be remembered for a lot of things. It was the first day of class for the Spring semester. It was the day that the Alabama Crimson Tide won their 16th (or 10th if you are picky) national football championship. It was also a day in which more than 240 AUM students enjoyed a new and unique event, the Silent Disco. (more…)

We Are in the Same Boat

Do you sometimes feel alone and need someone to understand what you are going through? Is the weight of the world holding you down? There is no need to feel alone when dealing with stress, depression or anxiety. The AUM Counseling Center will begin Mindfulness Group every Friday starting Jan. 29. Dealing with the stress of the semester can be overwhelming and impossible to take on without interaction from other peers. Group counseling will allow you to relieve stress and participate in activities that will help your mental health. There will be seven activities included in the meetings. (more…)

AUM Peace Tree 2015

Christmas lights are being hung, cookies are being baked, and of course trees are going up in nearly every household across the nation. AUM did its part in ringing in the holiday spirit. On Nov. 17, AUM Study Abroad partnered with the Roost to host its second annual AUM World Peace Tree. Students were able to come into the Roost and decorate their own ornament to hang on the tree. The tree adorned with flags from all over the world, including the programs Study Abroad has to offer, and signified the importance of the unity of all countries. (more…)

Hoops Madness

Come out and tip off the 2015-2016 basketball season as the Department of Athletics and the AUM Student Government Association hosts the first inaugural Hoops Madness. This event will include AUM’s Men’s and Women’s Basketball team player introductions, basketball challenges, promotional games and the unveiling of the new student section. “The student section will be more official this season and will truly be the voice of the students,” said Jake Wyatt with Athletic Administration. Sports entertainment is not the only treat at the event. The first 250 students to arrive will receive a free t-shirt; several other prizes will be up for grabs throughout the evening. Theatre AUM 40th Anniversary Gala

Theatre AUM is celebrating its 40th Anniversary with a production that include scenes, songs and monologues from shows that have been performed at Theatre AUM over the last 40 years. With a production like this underway, a moment of reflection is inevitable. “We are trying to incorporate as many shows as we can,” said Val Winkleman, who is Interim Head of the Department of Communication and Theatre. “Some will be omitted but we are paying homage – a kind of quilt – to the 196 shows that have been performed.” This 40th Anniversary show will be performed by a total of 32 actors and technicians who are alumni, faculty or current students. “I am excited about alumni coming back and working with current students,” Winkleman said. AUM Baseball and Softball Make Huge Splashes Under First-year Head Coaches

Two teams, two ideally similar situations and two fantastic seasons under their belt. For the AUM baseball and softball teams, 2015 marked the beginning of a new era. For the first time in either program’s history, they began their 2015 campaign without the head coaches that helped start up their respected sport. The softball team parted ways with head coach Chris Steiner-Wilcoxson in the fall of 2014, after six successful seasons. Steiner-Wilcoxson got the program off of the ground and running during her short tenure at AUM, posting a record of 189-85-2 in the team’s first six years of existence. Club Spotlight: Study Abroad

Traveling to another county is usually one of the top goals on many people’s bucket lists. However, the high cost of airfare is a major obstacle, especially for college students who still struggle to balance classes and jobs while aiming towards a degree. Now there is a new student organization on campus that aims to help cut down the costs for student explorers. It is called the Study Abroad Club. The club was started in fall of 2014 after a student’s suggestion to make a club to help raise funds towards study abroad trips. Since then, the group has been working to raise awareness about the study abroad programs offered at AUM as well as hosting events to help make trips more affordable for students.
